Simon Overland with Neil Mitchell

ABOVE: Watch Simon Overland with Neil Mitchell.

REPORT: The Chief Commissioner Simon Overland has accused The Australian newspaper of running a campaign against him after he was critical of the paper leaking details about anti-terrorism raids.

It follows revellations in today's paper that Mr Overland divulged secret evidence from a phone tap which inadvertently led to the collapse of a murder case.

Three years ago he allegedly passed on intelligence to then police media manager, Stephen Linnell, in a bid to defuse a rumour of a tax-payer funded overseas management course on 3AW Breakfast's Rumour File.

That action initiated a series of related leaks that tipped off a police suspect in Operation Briars - set up to investigate in the murder of a male prostitute.

Mr Overland admits he made Stephen Linnell aware of the information he had picked up from the phone taps.

Leave your feedback below, which could be read on air.

  • Extremely confused! Mr Overland states in this interview that prior to him speaking to Linnell about the Rumour file, (3.55 sec) that these police under investigation for the murder were clearly aware of the investigation into themselves early on and they also knew that their phones were being tapped (6.42 seconds). If these are the facts, how did these police know, was it someone leaking to them within his own investigation team? And why then was Ashby and Mullet charged with leaking and ruining the investigation when these police already know about it. If Mr Overland knew this to be the case how can he then carry on about acts of bastardry committed by Ashby etc which is mentioned within his affidavit. This man is either extremely confused or not telling the truth. Either way after reading everything I could on this, it appears he wanted some people out of his way and he will eventually be caught out, sacked and gone.

  • Can anyone please explain to me what Simon Overland did was any different to the discussions between Paul Mullet and Noel Ashby? Funny how those 2 who were not fans of John Brumby were "outed" by OPI leaks, lost their jobs and reputations and yet simon is propmoted to the top job and let to wander on through life. For far too long Nixon and Overland have had cosy a relationship with the labor government who have defended them to the hilt. The quicker we get a corruption commission with the power to go back in time the better as i believe that Simon will decide to "Retire" rather than face a truley independant inquiry. The fish that is Vic Police is beggining to stink, and it stinks from the top in this case. Its time to leave...... Simon and put someone into the job of Police Commissioner who isnt a sycophant of Brumby and bring respect and trust back to the top job. Do the right thing Simon and resign.

  • If a Police Commissioner is proven to be telling an untruth in a matter outside of an active case, it is in effect a lie. It is a sackable offence. He must be beyong reproach.
Brumby & Hulls seem to think if it is ok for them to lie it is acceptable for our Police Commissioner to lie. IT IS NOT.
    Mr Overland must resign.

  • Simon looking after public indeed "public safety etc etc", you, brumby and your OPI mates are nothing short of a full blown conflict of interest to humanity, anti democratic, hypocritical and given what NIXON and yourself have done to vicpol, you have never acted in the public interest ever! You do however have something to fear, you will fall on your own sword as have some of your cronies lately!
