Speed to blame for road death

Speed may be to blame for one of two fatal crashes on Victoria's roads overnight.

A man has died and his friend is seriously injured after their car hit a steep embankment on the Belgrave-Hallam Road in Belgrave.

The men, aged in their 20s, were not wearing seatbelts.

The passenger was flown to the Alfred Hospital with serious injuries.

Paramedic Amanda Kaighin says the car is a write-off

Earlier on the Great Ocean Road a 40-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a head-on smash near the Cumberland River.

In other tragic news, a 39-year-old man has died in hospital as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle collision in Blackwood on Sunday.

It is believed the man was travelling north on Myrniong-Trentham Road when he failed to negotiate a left hand bend and left the road, colliding with a traffic sign around 3pm.

He was taken to the Ballarat Base Hospital with serious internal injuries, but unfortunately died in the early hours of this morning.
