'Spoilt brats' staying put
Max, a squatter who lives in Melbourne University terrace house in Carlton, tried to justify people living in the building free of charge.
Justice Tony Cavanough has made an eviction order sought by the university, saying the squatters have no right to be living in the building.
Melbourne University wants the squatters out on Wednesday, which Max says will not happen.
Do you think that Max and his mates are doing the right thing by making a political point about the affordability of rental accommodation? Or are they just a pack of spoilt brats?

I am a uni student, part time via distance education. I also work fulltime (sometimes on weekends too). I also did work related study part time last year. And I am about to start again this year. I pay my HECS every fortnight. I pay for public transport. I pay for utilities. I pay for food. I pay for other luxuries. All that and I still manage to do well with my education (mind you, I'm 23 and I'm starting post-grad now), I do well at my job and here's the real surprise... I PAY MY RENT ON TIME EVERY MONTH.
This wankers are a bunch of self-pitying losers. I know what sort of life-style these students like. No one should give in to their demands. It's ridiculous.

Squatters? Twats more like.
What a bunch of freeloading twits. "Oh no.. I cant afford rent so I will STEAL from others"
Welcome to the real world you idiot... most people cant afford the things they want. You might have to even leave your massively important ARTS course, which will be a huge loss for the community.. of course, and go into the work force.
I know the world will be losing some terribly required by not having your genius input into the ARTS world... but we are prepared to live with it.
Uni students... your all tared with the same brush.OffTheRicta Thursday 8 January, 2009 - 10:15 AM -

if they paid rent, how could they afford their marijuana, beer and cigarettes.

The squatters tried to negotiate a deal with Melbourne University, offering to pay rent and utilities and to permanently run the facility as crisis accomodation. This model has been proven to work successfully at the University of Sydney, who have established similar student-run accomodation which has been running for the last two decades.
I've interviewed a number of the squatters and many of them genuinely have no place to live if they are evicted. Anyone who's tried to juggle study, poorly paid work and exhorbitant rental costs can identify with the actions of the Student Housing Action Collective, and to denigrate them as 'spoilt brats' looking for a freebie is completely missing the point.
