Telstra outage affects thousands
PLAYING NOW: Callers to Denis Walter talk about the problems they had trying to buy Oz Lotto tickets.
REPORT: A number of Telstra's larger customers in Victoria - including some bank services and government departments - experienced an outage of between 45 minutes and two and a half hours on their data network.
This may have affected their internet connections, telephones and other data services.
Around 20,000 ADSL services were also affected. The outage was caused by a hardware failure at around 1:20pm.
Services were restored from around 2:30pm and all services were restored by 3:45pm.
"We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience and assure them we are continuing to work to understand what happened and why," said Telstra in a statement.
It's also believed the Telstra outage affected people trying to buy tickets for the 'Oz Lotto' $50 million super draw.
Tattersall's spokesman Michael Mangos said problem was "internet related" and possibly affected other businesses, but the Tatts system was back up just after 3pm and ticket sales had resumed.

Hurrah for Conroy. Sheep move in a particular order head-bum-head-bum. Are we that different? Right. The ordinary man in-of the streets has no idea how advanced we are technologically. It's like comparing elephants to ants as far as we are technologically sound next to Germans and Japanese. Trust me, haven't seen anything yet.

Telstra has problems with its internet and broadband infrastructure on Sunday and Monday.
Interesting there seems to be no redundancy anywhere. I would have thought this is the concern.Pat Wednesday 30 June, 2010 - 11:07 AM -
Not only internet services but alternative forms of communications, leaving some of those "government departments" without contingency options such as satellite or 3G. Hospitals left without communication should never be allowed and Telstra needs to initiate immediate crisis management for such infrastructure. If this were an intentional action to cut our ability to transfer information we'd have a military response. Why does Telstra just get to make an apology ? Not good enough from the largest carrier in AU, nor was it good enough in Feb 09 when they blew away DNS for offshore.
