Major enquiries: Orchids

Why won't my orchid flower?
If you have a quality selected variety there can be 3 major reasons for non flowering. It is in too much shade over summer, your pots of orchids may be jammed too close to each other preventing air flow, or you may be feeding too much and promoting excess foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

How much water do they need?
Water each pot until there is a good flow of water from the drainage holes in the bottom. Do this once a week in winter gradually tapering up to every day in summer.

When do I divide my orchids?
When an orchid has grown too large for its pot you can either divide it into smaller pieces and repot them into small pots, or just move the whole plant into a slightly larger pot and let it keep getting bigger. The best time to do this is in Spring straight after flowering, starting in late August. Aim to finish all repotting by Christmas. Use only good quality specialty orchid mix.
