The high cost of sports fame

Steph Rice

Three-time Olympic Gold Medal-winner Stephanie Rice has not had a good week.

First of all there was the Twitter furore following Australia’s win over the Springboks in last weekend’s rugby union test in South Africa.

Today we learn that Miss Rice has now lost her $800,000 contract with Channel 7.

Channel 7 say their decision was not related to the twitter episode and the decision had been made prior to Stephanie Rice’s tweeted suggestion to all South African Springbok supporters.

Quade Cooper, who is the Australian Fly-half for the Wallabies, is also the new boyfriend of Rice according to the gossip columnists.

Cooper has also had his time in the media spotlight away from the sporting field as well. After returning from a Wallabies tour, where he played all four Tests in Australia's grand slam quest, Cooper was charged by police with burglary after allegedly robbing a residence on the Gold Coast.

Two points here, first of all do we ask too much of our sporting representatives and secondly just because some person swims extraordinarily well or bowls a cricket ball like no other, why do those who produce television automatically believe these people will be instant stars on TV.

The perception today is that Rice is now a failed television presenter as well as someone who struggles to contain her emotions on her twitter site.

The girl is 22 years old and swims exceptionally well, in fact faster than nearly any other woman in the world. Does that automatically mean that this young swimmer will now also be a fabulous politician, mentor to all young people and someone who is personally infallible?

The answer is of course no, Rice is a human being and is susceptible to the same rash decision making and impulses as the rest of us are.

Also, was Stephanie Rice afforded the resources to train her as a TV presenter by Channel 7? Apparently there was a rather scratchy performance on Make Me a Supermodel and that was the end of her TV career.

Or, if Stephanie was being paid $800,000 why did her and her management not use some of that money to hire someone to train her to become an accomplished media performer?

Unfortunately it seems that her management advice was very similar to those people who represent themselves in court.

Either way it does seem that Rice has paid a massive personal price for being able to swim so fast.

Rice gives a teary apology

Stephanie Rice Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice made a teary public apology over her homophobic slur on Twitter this afternoon, saying that she has learnt a huge lesson.
