ABOVE: The story so far, from a Taiwan point of view!

NEXT MEDIA ANIMATION: The Labor Party swept to victory in 2007, with Kevin Rudd coming into power as Prime Minister.

For a while, Rudd was enormously popular, but his plans to institute a new tax on mining companies and his failure to implement the government's emission trading scheme caused his popularity to plummet.

The Labor party rose up against their wounded leader.

In the end, he was replaced by his deputy, Julia Gillard. In this weekend's election, Gillard's toughest rival is Tony Abbott, leader of the Liberal Party.

Abbott promised to be tough on immigration if he becomes Prime Minister. Although polls show Abbott way ahead of Gillard, the Labor/Green party coalition still has more support when counted together.

'Crocodile Harry' has predicted a Labor victory.

This is the closest election in Australia in 50 years.

Confused? The 'result' explained

The Abbott family after historic night (AFP) Campaign 2010 has turned out to be the most dramatic and historic in more than years with Australia set to have a minority Government led by Tony Abbott with the support of three independents, all of whom were once members of the National Party.

'Call me Wyatt...'

wyatt WHO IS HE? Australia's newly-elected MP for Longman, Wyatt Roy, discusses his historic win as a 20-year-old and demontsrates why he's been mooted as a future leader of Australia.

Gillard 'will regret this forever'

jG HINCH: By 'pulling one on' as they say she virtually turned it into a campaign by two Opposition leaders. She did not have the oomph and power of incumbency that usually translates into votes for a PM.

  • Queensland voted against Gillard because she is from Melbourne and diposed Rudd.
Victoria voted for Gillard because she is from melbourne and female. This election result was dicided by the same people who vote on,so you think you'v got tallent.
Then there is those who voted green as a protest. Now they will find out what green policies are. And most will be wishing they had payed more attention befor they voted.

What a political animal the australian public have become.

  • @ mel I only follow 3AW online now. Too many ads and nonstop pandering to the conservative side of politics. Even the minor players (reporters/fill in hosts) have the same surnames as prominent Liberals.
