'The Ultranet don't work'
UPDATE: The Premier denies there have been any serious hiccups with the new Ultranet system during today's teacher training day.
The state opposition claims the system crashed at 9am this morning when thousands of teachers logged on.
But John Brumby says it is working well although it may be a little slow.
EARLIER: Half a million Government school students have a day off today so their teachers can be trained on the new 81 million dollar Ultranet on line education network.
Problem is, the whole system has crashed this morning.
'Mark' called in to 3AW's Neil Mitchell Program to report that all the teachers at his school haven't been able to log on because the system couldn't cope with the amount of users state-wide trying to access Ultranet.
A caller to the Rumour File phoned at warn that this would happen some time ago.
So as it stands at the moment, many of the teachers around Victoria are 'waiting to have some morning tea'.
Education Minister Bronwyn Pike says some teething problems are to be expected with the new Ultranet computer system.
AUDIO: Bronwyn Pike on Ultranet 'teething problems'
AUDIO: 'Ultra Not' alerts the Rumour File to Ultranet issues
PLAYING NOW: Justin Smith and Nick McCallum speak to 'Mark' who phoned to alert us that Ultra went down this morning followed by State Political Reporter Heidi Murphy.

At the school I work at staff spent the day exploring the IT resources it already has. Resources that the schools community provided through fundraising and donations. We discussed how we could make use of these resources in our classrooms and shared what we are already doing with them. We work collaboratively online through Google docs, email and blogs and so do our students. Iâ??m a professional and Iâ??m serious about the work that I do. When we spend millions on an Ultranet network, I expect it to be superior to what we can currently access from the web. I expect the government to provide the best, just like Iâ??m expected to do for all the children in my care.

All complex systems(natural or human made)some times fail to proceed. Unfortunatly this one broke down on the day before it,s big launch on Monday .
So what! If teachers are so overworked and stressed the day could have been gainfully used doing preparation (or was that all done in the first year of teaching)marking or just interacting meaningfully with other staff . Get over it and get on with itRussell Tuesday 10 August, 2010 - 11:35 AM -
It seems the Ultranet shares resources with VicRoads on line registration system which was "off the air" for most of yesterday. Quickly buy your new car before the school system goes live. It might be your last chance.

Regarding the ultranet, my wife is a teacher in a 3 teacher country school. She doesn't have time to get to her email much less spend all day on the computer. Her students are in the top 5% in the state in maths and literacy, yet she has grades 3,4,5,6 all in one room, and provides a curriculum for each level. The ultranet day was a total waste of time. It didn't function until after lunch. She would have far preferred to have had the day to prepare lessons and do correction. She is sorely overworked. This just added to her stress.

Maybe the Government can treat teachers like the professionals we are and stop dictating our Professional Learning dates to us and allow schools once again to schedule these days to suit OUR needs as we see just how unsuccessful it is with the powers that be i control!
Yes we all managed to fill our day in with many other important and professional activities but that now means we 'lazy' teachers will be giving up our own time after hours to do the training we should have been able to do today because there's fat chance the Dep or Gov will admit the stuff up and grant us another day for this 'vital' training.
It is very difficult to remain enthusiatic about a system that yet again has failed to deliver the goods. Would it be too much to ask if the Dep could finish a project and test it before they start expecting teachers to use an implement it. The same thing happened with VEL's - we were expected to learn and implement an 'initiative' that hadn't even finished being written!
I'm so sick off being branded unprofessional and unproductive by an administration that thinks this is a successful and productive use of our time. If this happened in any other industry there would be hell to pay and jobs on the line but no in education we can just write it off and make out it's no big deal.
