Time for motorbike crackdown?
Victoria's top traffic cop, Ken Lay, will reveal some alarming statistics in relation to hoon motorbike riders and how they contribute to a road toll which has increased from last year.
Deputy Commissioner Lay audio:
Key statistical features of motorcyclist deaths to date this year include:
- Motorcyclists make up about 20% of all road deaths this year. However, currently motorcyclists only account for 4% of the Victorian motor-vehicle fleet and less than 1% of the vehicle kilometres travelled.
- About 35% of fatalities have involved excessive or inappropriate speed.
- Police believe that more than 70% of all motorbike riders killed in road collisions were at fault.
Neil Mitchell says the stats prove motorbike riders are 'arrogant and stupid' and needlessly 'endangering the rest of us every day'.

MRA Victoria are staging a "protest" ride on Wednesday 7TH JULY, 2010 4pm Docklands to Parliament House
All riders encouraged to support this protest event. Since we're all 'HOONS' we should make the effort to voice our rights before we wake up one day soon and find that it's become illegal to even own let alone ride a bike in Oz.

Mark Twain once wrote "There are three kinds lies, lies, damn lies and STATISTICS" (capitals mine). Me thinks that Ken Lay is telling porkies.

I have never heard such rubbish, ive been riding 18 years had a couple of accidents ALL under 50kmh on a bike that is capable of 300kmh, i have never once flipped the camera the bird, i have never once wheelied past a camera dropped a burnout or anything like that..my challenge to the people slandering us is. book in do a rider safe course ride for a year and come back and tell us how you felt, then you would have SOME understanding of what it feels like to take life into your own hands regardless if your behaving or not.we ride cos we love to not because were brain dead morons.

In the name of balance....
Can we see a sample of cars doing similar please.
As a regular commuter on a bike i see cars and bikes doing stupid things. way way more cars though.
The difference is motorcyclists are not driving around in a 1 1/2 ton lethal weapon.
If we wish to resolve our carbon emission issues and road congestion cars are not the way.
why don't you and your mate ken pick on someone your own size pal!!!Stuart Saturday 3 July, 2010 - 6:13 AM -
I'm a 35 year old woman - not what you think of when you hear the word hoon, and yet I ride a motorbike. Why do I ride? I choose 2 wheels to actively reduce my carbon footprint and do my bit to reduce congestion on our ever increasingly congested roads. I resent being called a hoon and I resent public figures poisoning the minds of other road users against motorcyclists. Neil Mitchell and Ken Lay you are both fools! There are less than desirable elements amongst all road user groups, why the big push against motorcyclists? Efforts should be made to increase motorcyclists as a proportion of road users rather than slander the only road group that helps keep roads flowing and congestion down. Fools!

Neil, you fool...if someone is riding away on a motorcycle from an armed robbery , unless he is riding it backwards, a front numberplate isn't gonna be much good....Up here for thinkin' ;)
