Dr Maixner reveals Trishna is now awake and in the arms of excited guardian Moira Kelly, but the fight is far from over for Trishna's sister, Krishna.

  • The team that is responsible for the successful surgical separation of the conjoined twins is huge. It includes the surgeons, the theatre sisters, the staff who do pathology, x-rays, pharmacy, anaesthetics, after-surgical-care etc, etc. The team also includes all those who are now no longer practicing but who moved the boundaries of our knowledge on these matters to their current state.

For the surgical team it has been an opportunity to do a once in a lifetime procedure. It is good to hear the energy that they have brought to the task. It is good to hear that they did not charge for their services.
However let consider our whole health system as it stands. Some patients deteriorate and even die whilst waiting for attention in emergency departments. Many patients still wait for surgery in public hospitals and many wait for a bed or an outpatient appointments.

We did not see these problems with the twins who came to Victoria in a very bad state of health. We did not see that with Tim Holding when he came to an emergency department some months ago. We did not see it for Mr Horta who was flown to Australia for medical care.

Let us celebrate our success, but let us keep a level head as to what really happens in our hospital system on a day-to-day basis.

Finally talking about the twins, I was most interested in the reported reaction of the biological parents who talk about their daughters living in Australia and of coming out to see them here. Did they ask to come out to see their children before this risky surgery?

It is indeed a news story but no more than that.

  • Paul, I feel sorry for you that you are so jaded.

    Rejoice in this.
I have been truelly moved by all involved.

  • Paul, the country would only be going down the drain if everyone had the same attitude towards this story as you do. My 2yo son is alive and well because of this amazing skilled surgeon. How about you pull your head out of your ****, go back to school and learn some compassion/humility (as well as how to spell) you selfish clown.

  • Paul, with such a negative attitude like yours is there any wonder all you want is bad news. I thought I was the eternal pessimist but you have converted me. Thanks buddy.
