Prime Minister speaks: What Wilkie's support cost Gillard

REPORT: The independents will spend Friday putting their thoughts on paper, after a series of intense briefings from government departments and ministers.

Outspoken Queensland independent MP Bob Katter has given both major parties his wish list, which includes no mining tax and no carbon tax.

Mr Katter hopes he and his two country colleagues will decide as a bloc whether to support Labor or the Coalition to form a government but admits they could all go their separate ways.

Meanwhile, the Opposition is continuing to defend its decision  to offer Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie $1 billion to fix Hobart Hospital.

Mr Wilkie rejected the offer and instead has accepted a $300 million deal from Labor, giving the ALP its 74th seat - two short from forming government.

The Opposition says it remains committed to the $1 billion upgrade if it's able to win power with the help of the three country independents.

Shadow Health Minister Peter Dutton says locals have been long been asking for the hospital to be rebuilt.

Key independent Tony Windsor has criticised Wilkie for 'going public' with the Coalition's $1 billion offer and hinted Australia will know which party will form government on Tuesday, most likely.

Down to Tony Windsor?

The independents make Australia wait - for too long? HINCH VIDEO BLOG: I suspect though that out in the electorate people are suffering ‘pollie fatigue’. There’s a feeling of ‘get it over with’. Either come up with a solution, form a sustainable government, or go back to the polls.

Blog comments Your Say

  • I would have thought before siding with one party or the other a quick look at party policies would have been 'useful'. Certainly, the Coalition seem more enlightened on the environment and agriculture.

For a stable government one would assume they had already shown stability, that I don't think the ALP have.

  • Who in their wildest dreams would have thought such a caper was plausible, let alone possible?
Andrew 'The Snitch' Wilkie boarding Gillard's 'rat ship'. A move no doubt anticipated all along.
'Loose lips sink ships' too Julia and your now rat ship is sure to go down in bigger style than the Titanic.
Be sure to keep a sharp lookout on the bridge if you end up setting sail Prime Minister. If any unchartered waters look like hindering your passage, be sure you throw Bill Shorten overboard before raising anchor, because a voyage like the one you're anticipating is destined to turn out like the 'Mutiny on the Bounty'!!!
