We've got a knife-off

PLAYING NOW: Derryn Hinch speaks to Canberra correspondent Latika Bourke about the copy cat politics.

Both parties have unveiled there policies on dangerous weapons, with Prime Minister Julia Gillard pledging to outlaw the importation of a host of serious weapons if it is re-elected.

The Federal government will outlaw 22 weapons including knuckle dusters, stun guns and a host of knives if it wins the election.

Almost 17 thousand knives and other weapons were detected by customs and boarder protection last year.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor says the importation ban will lead to few fatalities and injuries related to knife crime

Opposition leader Tony Abbott has also announced he will crackdown on violent gang and knife crime if elected.

While campaigning in Melbourne Mr Abbott pledged to create a national violent gang data base and a squad to police them.

  • After stabbing Kevin Rudd in the back, Julia Gillard now wants to outlaw knives amongst other weapons...?
    Good one Jules, good one!
Some words of advice; don't turn your back on your no-good party Prime Minister, because the knives are waiting to strike when you least expect. So look out for Bill Shorten, because he'll be wielding a 'Bowie'...!!!

  • The Feds aren't really interested in minimising street violence...
If they were, theyâ??d do what they could to minimise the total consumption of alcohol and binge drinking.
A minimum of 48% of all incidents of street violence are alcohol related.
Most experts believe this number is an under reporting of the contribution alcohol sales make to our violence toll.
Alcohol advertising ban would reduce consumption by around 25%.
State government programs can tackle the rest.
The most effective and most cost effective measure any federal government could do to minimise violence on our streets is to curb the promotion of alcohol consumption.
