'White stripe' just a vapour trail

Talkback callers flooded the lines during Denis Walter's Afternoons program on Wednesday to report the 'white line' above the Melbourne CBD which 'leads all the way to Geelong', according to 'Dean'.

The line, which coincides with a plane circling the same area, is apparently nothing more than a vapour trail.

Conspiracy theories on hold - for now...

  • Contrails are so prevalent over the U.S.A. that planes now are prohibited from flying over the grand canyon ... why? 'Cos they ruin photos taken by tourists. The problem is so great that Hollywood rarely makes westerns in the states these days, preferring to shoot south of the border ... a 747 flying over shoot out at the OK Corral in 1850 kind of ruins the emotional journey.

You don't see them when planes are climbing and descending, in the warmer air. Which is why they are rare over Melbourne.

  • Sorry Max, I've done my homework. They're contrails, caused engine exhaust of aircraft, usually in the cruise, and in atmosphere moist enough for formation of Cirrus clouds, usually where it is Isothermal (-57 degrees C). Small contrails, caused by latent heat being released by wing tip vorticies are usually only visible from other aircraft. If you buy my book, (ON TOUR: TRAVELS WITH AN AIRLINE PILOT), page 178 has a great pic of the ones over Geneva; pages 260 and 266 have very nice pics of the daily NATRAK contrails over the North Atlantic. Contrails are made from the name, condensation trails. It's like steam from a kettle. Chemicals released by the burning of jet fuel (highly filtered kerosine) are invisible to the naked eye. As an aside, before you get carried away about fuel dumping, (which planes do to lower their landing weight in an emergency), it evaporates after falling less than 5,000 feet, which is why in Australia you are not allowed to dump fuel less than 6,000 feet above ground level.

  • These are Chem Trails and are not normal contrails. I have seen these trails last Summer.

I took photos , they were criss crossing the sky on a warm night at low altitude.
