SHANNON REID, 3AW: Peter Costello has been quoted as saying that Wyatt Roy is on track to be the leader of the Liberal Party in 2035 and if tonight’s election result is anything to go by he has made good start.

As one of the youngest candidates in the election, Wyatt Roy has won the seat of Longman in Queensland.

Not bad for a 20-year-old university student (many say he looks more like 16) who three years ago reportedly failed to become a prefect at his local high school three times even though he got the popular student vote. He's puts his bad luck down to the 'unionist Labor teachers'.

On Facebook he is a fan of American lingerie brand Victoria's Secret, KFC, The Economist and "State of Origin fights".

Up to the 2007 federal election the seat of Longman was held by the coalition's Mal Brough, when it was won by Labor's Jon Sullivan.

The seat of Longman has been under the spotlight during the 2010 election campaign and Wyatt Roy has run a grassroots style campaign throughout and has used the media spotlight beautifully to focus on the local issues.

Whichever way you look at it, it's a monumental day for this young man becoming the youngest member elected to any Australian parliament.

  • Wow Luke, you really need to get a life... Just because he cares for his electorate more than that other clown did... Just because he's young and fresh faced does NOT give you the right to pick on him. You are the ignorant one...

  • WTF?? What a loser this kid is, ignorant and in parliament? What can he understand about solving problems when he is still forming and has no life experience...this could only happen in QLD when most dumb people in Australia are living ..boooooo Wyatt (Wankyatt)..it is obvious he is there to make quick money and retire ASAP! Taxpayers are giving him the chance to become a wealthy person...can't believe this is happening and people are so slow not to get it.

  • Barry, The Constitution does say you have to be 21 unless overridden by the Federal Law of Australia, and the Federal Law of Australia indicates anyone over 18 can run for Parliament. So you're half right.

  • The constitution says that a member (of parliament) has to be at least 21 years old. has this provision changed?
