Posted by: Ben Wise | 1 June, 2010 - 9:26 AM

7:10pm: The 42-year-old woman who was stabbed and set alight at a service station in Bayswater on Tuesday morning has passed away in hospital tonight.

The woman died from horrific burns as a man remains under police guard in hospital following a day of drama in Bayswater.

Her attacker, a man armed with a knife, then held police at bay for several hours behind a nearby church.

Officers discharged capsicum foam and shot at him using a bean bag gun before he surrendered peacefully.

Victoria Police has offered to organise counselling for anyone who witnessed today's fire, while homicide squad detectives have appealed for anyone with footage of the incident to come forward.

Witnesses and affected members of the public should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

11:30am: 3AW Reporter Yvette Gray told Neil Mitchell the man who allegedly set a woman on fire after stabbing her at a service station in Bayswater has now been taken into custody.

He was 'shirtless' and on a stretcher, Gray said, before adding he was then taken away by ambulance.

11:10am: 3AW Reporter Yvette Gray told Neil Mitchell the man who allegedly set a woman alight after stabbing her in Bayswater this morning is contained by police in the courtyard of a church near where the horrible incident occurred.

Gray said police may have used a 'bean bag' gun.

10:33am: It's now believed the suspect is still holed up in a garage near where the incident occurred this morning.

Channel 7 reporter told Neil Mitchell police dogs have been used and man is 'contained', not 'detained'.

10:10am: Neil Mitchell says he has confirmed with police, who he will speak to soon on 3AW, that a man has been taken into custody after a woman was stabbed and set alight at a Bayswater service station today.

The woman has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Truck driver Beau Flemming had earlier told Neil Mitchell he was driving down Mountain Highway when he heard an explosion and saw the car alight.

He said bystanders grabbed fire extinguishers and tried to help the woman, who was completely engulfed in flames, however the man prevented anyone from approaching her.

"The male was running around waving knives and everyone was trying to help the female and it went pear-shaped real quick," he told 3AW. "[She was] engulfed, completely. All her hair, everything. There was not one bit of white skin left."

He said a bystander jumped in his Hummer and drove at the man in a bid to 'run him over so we could have access to her'.

"He was waving knives around at us, a very scary situation for everyone ... he was telling her to burn, yeah, just not a very pleasant sight. The car was completely engulfed, she was completely engulfed, there was just black smoke pouring out from underneath the servo. We were just trying to get her away because we didn't know if they had shut the valves off to the pumps or anything."

10:00am: A caller to 3AW's Neil Mitchell program says police have surrounded a garage where it's believed the man who stabbed and set alight a woman in Bayswater this morning is inside.

9:30am: A woman has been stabbed and her car set alight at a service station in Bayswater this morning.

It's understood the fire also spread to a bowser at the service station on the Mountain Highway.

Police say the woman has suffered superficial injuries in what is thought to be a domestic dispute.

At this stage no arrests have been made.

Beau Flemming, who witnessed the incident, was in shock as he told 3AW's Neil Mitchell what involvement he had in helping the woman.
