Hockey slams ALP over inflation

Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey says the Australian public won't allow the Government to blame rising banana prices for another rise in the inflation rate.

The Consumer Price Index has increased by point-nine-of-a-percent in the June quarter for an annual increase of three-point-six per cent.

The Queensland floods and cyclone Yasi are still being blamed as the main contributors.

The figures come as the Australian dollar shoots to a dollar-10 US, making imports cheaper.

Mr Hockey says the Labor Government's promise to fight inflation has been a scam.

Meanwhile, Treasurer Wayne Swan says he doesn't believe Australian consumers are being ripped off by the retail sector despite the Aussie dollar being attractive for imports.

Mr Swan says the worst affected will be retailers, not the consumers.

  • Gee what a surprise!
It will just get worse under Juliar, Wayne, Bob, Greg and Kev.
Remember it was labor that took the 'cost of housing' out of the inflation figures (thanks Paul), so it is actually much worse than they are portraying.
