Well-rested Hinch wandering around
3AW Drive presenter Derryn Hinch says ‘every day alive is now a blessing’ almost a week after undergoing liver transplant surgery.
Speaking from the Austin Hospital on Monday morning, an upbeat Hinch said there’s still a danger his body will reject his new liver but he’s now walking unaided and had a very restful 10-hour sleep last night.
He finds it hard to believe he has had a new liver for five days.
It was last Tuesday night when Hinch’s radio producer, Shannon Reid, handed him the phone while he was in a Melbourne pub for a 3AW function and said: “You’ve got the call.”
Today, Hinch paid tribute to Ms Reid, saying she has done himself and his wife, Chanel, 'very proud' the way she has handled the associated media coverage relating to his operation.
In other developments, Hinch’s voice is again at full strength after medication made him difficult to understand soon after his operation.
Hinch last night tweeted from hospital: “Blood tests good. Walking and showers unaided. Never so positive. Reckon my life now better than some pollies and Murdoch.”
'I'm The Luckiest Guy Alive'
HINCH ON FRIDAY: "Barrelling along. I've had a shower, had a shave. Going for a couple of walks today. Had the naso-gastric tube taken out of my stomach ... Feel terrific. If I could con them, I'd go back to work but they are too smart for me."

Hinch is a former police rounds reporter, former foreign correspondent, former newspaper editor, former host of national current affairs shows, former novelist, former radio host in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, former MIDDAY host and former jailbird.

Great news Hinch. My wife Jackie just got a new liver too. She was put on the transplant list on a Friday and got the call the next day. Some say it dumb luck but I think its divine intervention.
God Bless,
Ron
