Jim Stynes stands down
Club legend Jim Stynes has stood down as Melbourne president at the club's annual general meeting at the MCG on Wednesday night.
Stynes has been fighting cancer in full view of the public eye, and his brave approach has inspired thousands of Australians.
He will now pull away from his duties with the Demons to concentrate on his health and family.
Acting president Don McLardy has taken over from Stynes, who released this statement on Wednesday night:
"As Melbourne enters what promises to be an exciting new season, and hopefully exciting new era, I see this an opportune time to step down as Melbourne president," said Stynes.
"It will give the football club the best chance to be 100 per cent prepared for round one and will give me the time to fully focus on my health and family. I am extremely proud of what the board has managed to achieve since I took on the presidency in June 2008, particularly in bringing a greater sense of unity and purpose to the club."
"I have full confidence that Don McLardy and the team will continue that work. Don has my full support to lead the club and the Demons can rely on me to help out in an advisory capacity at any time."
Earlier, 3AW's Neil Mitchell paid tribute to the work Stynes has done at the helm of Melbourne.
"The history of the club will show that Jim was crucial to its rebuilding. If we win a premiership in the next five years it will be directly to the credit of Jim Stynes," said Stynes' friend and Melbourne supporter, Mitchell.
3AW Radio sends its support to Stynes and his family.

I was working at the Melbourne Football club as a part time trainer when Jim Stynes first came to the club, all though I have not seen him in several years, I wish him well and of course his family. A True Gentleman may his be bright and full of health.

Jim Stynes should have been Australian of the Year. He came to this country, adopted our ways and has always been an inspiring example of courage, integrity and a community leader extraordinaire. He's a magnificent example to our youth and everyone who meets him. If only all our immigrants were of his outstanding, impeccable character.
In my eyes, a rich movie actor doesn't even come a close second Aussie of the Year, behind Jim Stynes. We all love and admire Jim Stynes very much.June Wednesday 1 February, 2012 - 5:54 PM
