The woman who 'stole' the Djokovic T-shirt

SUMMARY: The woman at the centre of the Novak Djokovic t-shirt 'scandal' says she's been harassed.

Yael Rothschild is accused of 'snatching' the Australian Open champion's shirt from a teenager when he threw it into the crowd at the end of the men's final.

She has repeatedly denied the allegation and says she's been repeatedly harrassed since the incident.

Her husband Rayman told 3AW the family doesn't want the souvenir anymore.

The shirt was auctioned for charity, Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

It was snapped up by the teen who original claimed the shirt was for her.

PLAY: Yael Rothschild's husband speaks to Neil Mitchell and then Melissa's mum calls in to bid for the shirt, with $5,500 going to charity.

Neil Mitchell will auction it off this morning, February 3, at 9:30am.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

Ted Baillieu started the bidding at $200 just after 8:30am on the program.

EARLIER: Derryn Hinch has a little dig at the woman who he believes snatched Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic's shirt away from its intended recipient.

  • What a saga. The Rothchilds played every card. Self-serving victor and victim all in the one week and then benevolent donor. They tried the race card. Now the Rothschild get a very nice tax break from the auction.

The Cook girl was exposed as an over-indulged spoiled brat. Spare the rod and spoil the child. I think I now see where Ted is coming from about spanking!. I see Cook growing up into a Rothschild type over the next 20-30 years.

Both representative of the ugly side of Australia and profound sports fiends.

QED: Ms Rothschild and Ms Cook.

  • Just look, at her name, explains her actions, just shocked she didn't sell it on ebay top make a profit. Why is Mitchell making a hero of himself, he should give it to the kid it was hers until it was stolen from her.

  • I would like to see Rothschild in action at the Myers boxing day sales or catching the brides flowers at a wedding.

There is a woman who would know how to get her way at any cost.

Part of me envies her because I could never do that

  • Well played Rothschilds! By nominating a registered charity to receive the proceeds they've reduced their tax bill this year by over $2000 courtesy of ordinary Australian taxpayers. That's more than they would have reaped from a straight ebay sale.
What a grubby, sordid episode featuring a cast of characters with more money than class.
Can I suggest that next year any players who want to give their gear away should jump the fence & head for the cheap seats?

  • From a technical curiosity point of view, how was the camera angle able to be shifted on the replay vision? Was that footage from a different camera ? (The slow-motion bit, at about the point where Derryn says 'Now the woman who got it..'). Thanks.
