Slur 'slightly over the line'
The AFL has managed to put a positive spin on the Patrick McGinnity's case.
McGinnity was suspended yesterday for saying he would 'rape' the mother of Ricky Petterd.
AFL Football Oerations Manager Adrian Anderson told Sports Today the incident is not all bad news.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 16
UPDATE: AFL General Manager Football Operations Adrian Anderson has condemned the slurs used by West Coast Eagle Patrick McGinnity and says the AFL expects ‘the highest standards from players’.
The AFL endorsed has endorsed the decision by the West Coast Eagles to suspend McGinnity for one match after he was involved in an on-field exchange with a Melbourne opponent during last Sunday's match at Etihad Stadium.
"The AFL is extremely disappointed this incident occurred. There is no place for highly-offensive comments within our game that are disrespectful towards women," Mr Anderson said.
"The AFL Respect and Responsibility Policy clearly outlines the expectations for all players on how to conduct themselves and there is no place for any such behaviour.”
WEST COAST: West Coast Eagles defender Patrick McGinnity will be suspended from this week's match against Essendon after an investigation from Sunday's game against Melbourne deemed he had breached the AFL's respect and responsibility policy.
McGinnity has been suspended by the club for one match, will undergo counselling in relation to the AFL's respect and responsibility policies and will be fined $2500. He will also issue an apology to the Melbourne player involved in the incident.
"I deeply regret the words I used in a verbal altercation on Sunday," McGinnity said. "The heat of the moment is no excuse for over-stepping the mark and I sincerely apologise to the Melbourne player who my comments were directed at."
Immediately the club became aware of the incident, it acted as quickly as possible with the Melbourne Football Club to resolve the matter. The behaviour of Patrick McGinnity, in this instance, does not reflect the values of the club and chief executive officer Trevor Nisbett said he was pleased that McGinnity had apologised immediately.
"The comments made by Patrick do not reflect the values of our football club and we acted quickly when we became aware of the issue," Nisbett said.
"We have high standards as a club, which we have continued to enforce in recent years and we are disappointed Patrick stepped outside those guidelines. We will continue to educate our players on their responsibilities around this and other AFL policies."
There will be no further comment on this matter by the West Coast Eagles.

3AW NEWS: The AFL has been rocked by another vilification case, this time involving a players mother.
West Coast tagger Patrick McGinnity faces suspension and a hefty fine for vilifying Melbourne forward Ricky Petterd during their match on Sunday.
It's understood McGinnity made offensive and disparaging comments about the Demon's mother following a confrontation at the start of half-time.
The 22-year-old has been charged under the AFL's strict code of conduct regarding respect to women.
He's issued an apology to Petterd over the phone and the AFL is expected to announce McGinnity's sanctions today.
It follows the suspension of Western Bulldogs player Justin Sherman in June after he racially abused Gold Coast teenager Joel Wilkinson.
