'A Transplanted Life'

I want to bring you up to date on my health. After all, I’ve only spoken once since my liver transplant – and that was ON 3AW within hours of it happening. Cant’ believe how I did that from the intensive care unit at the Austin.

Just over a year ago I started a blog by saying: ‘I have liver cancer. I intend to tell you about it’. And I have. There were months when it didn’t look like I would get a transplant in time. And I thought I would not be alive to see this Christmas. At Crown last New Year’s Eve, Chanel asked me for my New Year’s Resolution. Simple. To be back there at Crown to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2012. And I will be.

And that’s thanks to a lot of people. Especially the organ donor and that donor’s family whose gift of life gave me a second life. And the team at the Austin Hospital Liver Transplant Unit. Bob Jones, Graham Starkey, David Yeo and Larry McNicoll. Plus Paul Gow and the after-surgery support team at clinic.

Six months ago I was a dead man walking. Now I feel great. May live another ten to twenty years.

Just one thing niggles me. Everybody says – including the amazing Professor Jones – that it really was a blessing in disguise that house arrest forced me to rest and recuperate.   That’s partly true.

But I want to make such health decisions myself and not be forced to because of a bad law that doesn’t protect your children.

And speaking of children. Talk to them about being an organ donor. Learn about it.  I’ve made a submission to the parliamentary committee which is looking at the Opt-out system for organ transplants instead of the current opt-in system.  You’ll hear a lot about that from me in the months ahead.

In the meantime me and my new liver are doing fine. It is a medical miracle. And luckily nobody has yet got to use that headline:  Liver rejects Hinch.

New Liver For Hinch

hinch Derryn Hinch received a life-changing phone call while he was farewelling a 3AW colleague on Tuesday night and now has a new, donated, liver.
