Derryn starts the next 50 years!
SHANNON REID - SENIOR PRODUCER 3AW DRIVE:
My ‘boss’ Derryn is heading off on a well-deserved break today and I thought I would acknowledge in his 50th year in media, and one of his most difficult, that we all know we are stuck with him for probably another 50 the way he goes about it!
Probably one of the more difficult experiences in my career was the day the man I have worked with for over three years and admired for many more told me that he had liver cancer.
It wasn’t just the words I was hearing that upset me, but the look on his face and the tears welling in his eyes as he delivered the news. You see, Derryn Hinch is not just the presenter I work with on a daily basis he is also a friend, a confidant and a mentor.
When people find out I work with Derryn, it is usually a look of genuine concern that comes over their faces ... a look of ‘are you okay’? And then it is quickly followed up with the usual question of ‘What’s he like to work with?’
I love that question because it gives me the chance to proudly and honestly tell them that I love working with Derryn. I may not always agree with what he says (he doesn’t call me Mother Theresa for nothing), but I admire that he is a person who stands by what he believes and he says things with absolute conviction. And for the most part he is a big softie who loves a laugh.
Sometimes I wonder how we get a program together because often our conferences turn into hysterical laughter (usually at my expense) about anything from what some bozo yelled at him when he drove home from work or the latest trick he played on Chanel.
And even though he has this diagnosis, you wouldn’t know. He just carries on as normal and has the most amazingly positive attitude toward what he faces. It is something to be admired and I would hope, if faced with the same prognosis, that I would handle it with such strength.
Aside from that he looks the healthiest I have seen him look in a long time to the point that sometimes I forget that he’s sick and I think he sometimes does too. In fact, on our recent trip to Canberra for the High Court challenge, a journalist walked up to Derryn at Parliament House and said ‘How’s your battle going?’ I immediately thought that he was talking about the court case and later Derryn admitted he did as well (although he did answer the question about his health).
So while it’s difficult to fathom that he is so unwell, I can only think that he is going to be absolutely fine. Derryn is a fighter in all aspects of his life and I believe this fight will be no different. He is taking it head on and so far he’s winning. In years to come, it will be just another story to tell. Although we’re headed for some tough times ahead, I feel honored that not only do I get to work with him everyday, but I get to call this great man my friend.
Can’t wait to have you back in 2011 – bigger and badder than ever.

Good news for Hinch!
"I made it! On the official waiting list for a donor liver. Passed 27 hours of tests. Old heart, lungs and kidneys scored well." 3AW Radio continues to with Derryn and his wife Chanel the best.
Hinch: I have cancer
I've been diagnosed with cancer. I have liver cancer. And it requires major surgery very soon. I’ve talked before about a ‘pesky spot’ on my liver that has been dormant since I was very sick about four years ago. And I nearly died back then from septicaemia.
