REPORT (5PM Friday): The Indian community has gathered around the  parents of three-year-old Gurshan Singh, whose body was found last night in long grass by the side of a road in Melbourne's north.

The toddler had disappeared six hours earlier from his Lalor home 30 kilometres away.

Gurshan's parents are staying with a cousin in nearby Thomastown and being comforted by members of the Indian community, including the consul-general.

A housemate of the Indian family - who lived at the same address in David Street Lalor - says the boy had earlier been upset and was screaming after his father had gone to the nearby Library without him.

Detective Inspector Steve Clark says police are trying to piece together what happened.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says he wants to know the facts surrounding the death of the Indian toddler in Melbourne before commenting on how it will affect relations between the two countries.

Prime Minister Rudd says for now his thoughts are with the family.

  • The accused Dhillon should be punished severly. He had no right to take a child's life. How could he keep the child in the boot and drive around for 3 hours. Poor child suffered a lot and the loss for the parents.
    He should not go unpunished.

  • This tragic death gets more and more bizarre by the day. We still have claims of a mysterious good samaritan who for some strange reason has not been located or come forward. Strange behaviour for a good samaritan one thinks. Now there are reports that the person allegedly responsible for the boys death, apparently hit him with a door (accidentally or otherwise) with such force that it rendered the tot unconscious. Such a bang on the head surely would have been picked up during the autopsy yet there was no mention of this in the report.

All of this is still very very suspicious and I do hope that Hinchy follows up the developments in this case.

  • The Police could have advised that "it was not a racist" attack,if they knew at the time.

Has the Indian media been told we cannot accept murder by its nationals (irrespective of their class and caste) ?

Are some people a little ecstatic knowing the alleged person involved was Indian, when after it appeared obvious it was a murder investigation?

To the Indian media -ur time had to come!!!!
