Hinch suddenly gives a Twit!

Historic Audio - Hinch enters the Twitterverse

HINCH: Confession time. Capitulation time. Today, the last of the Luddites is joining Twitter. I surrender. I’ve called it rubbish. Called it puerile. Called it a monumental waste of time. And now this twit is about to tweet.

I guess you can teach old dogs new tricks. I’ve been swayed over the past 48 hours by several people but especially 3AW’s super-Tweeters Ben Wise and Latika Bourke. And secret Tweeter my producer Shannon Reid.

It may turn out to be a case of ‘Ben Wise and Hinch foolish’ but 3AW’s communications guru gave me a demo and some convincing arguments about what an instant communications tool it can be. He also showed me some of the things that were being said about me but that’s a different story.

Actually when the Twitter world started discussing my antipathy and refusal to join it somebody tweeted ‘forget Hinch… he’s so 90s’ I took that as a compliment.

This election has shown how powerful Twitter has become. And it will become a  weapon for people in oppressed countries. Mobile phone videos were an essential tool in the protests in Iran and you can see how iPhones and text messages and Twitter will inevitably help defeat totalitarian regimes in China and Iran and North Korea and Burma.

(The US State Department’s chief spokesman this week used his personal account to welcome North Korea to Twitter and wrote: ‘The Hermit Kingdom will not change overnight, but technology once introduced can’t be shut down… Just ask Iran’.)

I still think people who tweet about what they had for dinner and other personal stuff should get a life. So anybody who follows me – if that’s the terminology --  shouldn’t expect such trivia.

I’m still not sure why the hash key is so important or how you follow or get followed. But I am about to try. So if you see the signature #sliife. That’s a Hinch tweet.

Hinch couldn't give a Twit!

Hinch watches the @3AW693 Twitter site in action Derryn Hinch has made it clear many times that he things Twitter is an absolute joke, a waste of time, etc. We could write many more of his adjectives for Twitter if we were 'that kind' of website, but we're not.
