HINCH: Never has a prime minister’s stumble into office been announced in such a rambling, stumbling, self-indulgent rant.

Julia Gillard’s 76-74 victory, 17 days after the election, was announced by Independent Rob Oakeshott in a 20-minute rant after Tony Windsor had told a televised Press conference (and the PMs-in-waiting) that he would support a Labor Government.

Oakeshott had flagged his decision early by talking about ‘the next government’ which couldn’t have happened if his vote had gone the other way to tie it up at 75-75.

(Two hours earlier of course Bob Katter had split with the Amigos by backing the Coalition in an equally crazy media session which took the numbers to 74-74).

Forget about Andy Warhol’s ‘15 minutes of fame’. Oakeshoot milked this forever. Before he announced his support for Labor he referred to it as ‘a juicy and sexy decision’.

He also talked about how his four-year-old and six-year-old were split on which way he should vote. It just shows you how crazy this had all become in the past fortnight that nobody thought that passing strange.

Oakeshott did say the choice between Gillard and Tony Abbott was ‘six to one, half a dozen to the other’ and used lines like ‘line ball’ and ‘a points decision’.

But in the end, not surprisingly, it seemed to come down to: What can you do for country folk. The $42 billion National Broadband Network was to him the most important issue but so were health services and country education.

And Tony Windsor’s decision? I said yesterday: ‘In recent days, I’ve been putting ‘Uncle Tony’ Windsor’s vote into the Labor column on the basis that he wants a ‘stable’ government’. He mentioned that today. He claimed a Labor Government was more likely to run a full term because a Coalition Government would be tempted to go back to the polls early because they were more likely to win it.

Sounded like he felt the electorate actually wanted a Coalition government. Weird.

Frankly, with its desperately cobbled together ‘Rainbow coalition’ of Labor, Greens and Independents, I can’t see this messy government lasting more than 12 months.

Both Oakeshott and Windsor have pledged not to block Supply and not to support any No Confidence vote. But then both said they might in exceptional circumstances.

As Oakeshott put it: ‘If we start getting done over in a deal’. He also says we are going to see an’ugly’ Parliament but one that is ‘beautiful in its ugliness’.

As the Broadway line goes: ‘Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a very bumpy ride.’

Footnote: There is one big winner here: Country Australia versus Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The Three Amigos have shaken Gillard down for billions. It’s got to come from somewhere.

At her press conference, before going off to the GG to be sworn in, Julia Gillard promised $800 million here and $500 million there (plus cheaper broadband in country areas) for a total  ‘bush bribe’ of $9.9 billion. What the hell? It got her the keys to The Lodge.

Julia Gillard remains PM

BREAKING NEWS: Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott have both backed the ALP. Their decisions mean Labor can form a minority government in Australia with Julia Gillard as Prime Minister.

  • He will not be elected again so he has to make the most of this time around.
Cheating your electorate in this way is political suicide.
Enjoy your limelight for you will not be in the same position come the next election.

  • I agree with Derryn. These (mainly the two)bafoons have voted with their egos not with the interests and intentions of the electorates. The NBN shows therir ignorance. Telstra have said their focus is on wireless, that the governments $43bill. plan is a farce and will blow out to $90Bill.for an outdated technology, optic fibre. Telstra reps have said wireless is cheaper, faster and could be rolled out as per coalition plan for $6Bill. 6000 towers plus. Fools and bafoons, they make me angry. Why doesn't the media do good investigative research any more. Keep on talking Derryn.

  • Darren is more right than most of his detractors and they simply don't like it . That's all. He does not have dung in the nose as those peasants believing they are queen makers. Wait till their electorate sort them out. I would.
