What we're talking about

How can Mehmet Ince still be here?

Posted by: Derryn Hinch | 21 September, 2009 - 5:20 PM

I want to talk about a killer and the way our Immigration Department treats violent migrants and their victims’ families.

I’ve talked about this man before. His name is Mehmet Ince. He came here from Turkey in 1995 and in the next two years committed more than 30 crimes. In 1997 he brutally shot dead Melbourne plumber Ian Broadbent in a road rage incident and he was jailed for 10 years.

His visa was cancelled. An appeal failed. And when he was released from jail last November he was placed in the Maribrynong detention Centre to be deported. That was nearly a year ago. He’s still here.

Not only still here but guess what he was doing today? He’s been released on a four-hour home visit to have lunch with his mum in Flemington.

All this with the approval of the Detention Centre’s Immigration Manager, Christina Santos, whom I believe has assured the killer that he’ll still be here at Christmas and will be able to spend  Christmas Day with his mother.

She apparently agrees with Ince who says the victim’s mother should ‘get over it’. Ince says Heather McDonald, mother of the murdered man, should think of his mother.

What also worries me is that somebody in Immigration Minister Chris Evans office has reassured Ince not to worry about media attacks and assured him he has at least half a dozen more avenues of appeal. Funded by the taxpayer of course.

Obviously what the Minister has been telling us on air and what somebody is telling this thug  are vastly different. Mehmet Ince should be deported. Should be gone by now. No ifs - no buts.

  • I have listened to Heather McDonald. My heart goes out to her she truly is locked into unforgiveness and that will destroy her eventually. I too lost my only son through violence, but I chose the way of forgiveness. Was it hard, was my heart breaking, was I devastated, answer to all and then some is yes. I chose forgiveness because life is a most precious thing and vengeance is not mine. Life is not fair and we as individuals have to realize this or we will live a life of struggles and pain. I chose the way of forgiveness and didn't take him through the legal system the man who had responsibility for my son's death...(mind you my son had something to do with and had to take responsibility in his part of the episode that happened) the young man responsible is living a life today, has a family has straightened his life up and a prominent upstanding member of the community. This is more important than any vengeance I could ever seek, for vengeance will not bring my son, or Heather's back. The desire for vengeance would only eat me up. Having been through this as Heather has, I know the way out for her, and I also know that because she has chosen to harbor and not forgive she is worse off today than she would be otherwise. I am so very thankful that we have a merciful system in this country. I wonder how Heather would feel if the roles were reversed and she was the mother of the boy who committed the crime. I understand her pain, but living in your pain is not the way to travel. I am a mother, just not a practicing mother.

    Thanks
