HINCH AFTER DARK: Peter Costello put it well. He said, as the results inched closer to a hung parliament, 'this is an election that hasn't ended'.
Earlier, he said Australia was facing a permanent election. An observation I described on Twitter as 'a priapic condition'.
But it is true. At midnight the call was Coalition 71, Labor 69, Independents 3, Greens 1 and six seats in doubt.
Costello was originally referring to the idea that whichever party formed a minority government they would be heading back to the polls in about 18 months.
But campaigning for this election isn't over yet. In their non-victory speeches both Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott started wooing the independents. Gillard even mentioned them by name and congratulated them on their victories without congratulating Wayne Swan or Kevin Rudd for getting re-elected.
Right now, I would have to say my money is on a minority Coalition Government. Abbott should be able to persuade the three independents, especially if he starts one or two seats ahead of Labor. He's already arguing the Coalition got 400,000 more votes than Labor nationally. On primary votes 44% to 38%.
And in all those independent seats the Labor primary vote was abysmal. The highest being about 22% in Bob Katter's seat.
His other argument will be the theme that there was a national swing against the Government. He'll also argue that if Labor was incompetent and couldn't govern well with an 18-seat majority how can they in a minority situation?
I'll leave the post mortem for another day but make one comment. Julia Gillard was a political fool to go to the polls so soon after the Rudd execution. She should have worked in the job for about six months. Not only so the blood would have dried and the scars healed but to establish herself as The Prime Minister.
By 'pulling one on' as they say she virtually turned it into a campaign by two Opposition leaders. She did not have the oomph and power of incumbency that usually translates into votes for a PM.
It is something she will regret forever. The lasting image tonight – and probably an indication: SKY News showed a late night shot of the Gillard party. A deserted hall with a lone musician on a cello. At the Abbott party the celebrations were continuing.

Cutting the immigration of non caucasians is not the answer.Caucasians are not the God chosen people they think they are.Controlling immigration, irrespective of race, is the way to go ..Getting here by boat without prior approval of the Australian government and the people it represents is absolutely wrong .Breach the law and run the risk of being sent back..Letus tell them that and let us reinforce it.

June, I am of Welsh extraction. We have to preserve that red head value starting from now. Y'now why.
We ran from the hordes up there and guess what they are running after us here now. The next sanctuary? May be Mars.

scary thought Racine, but I do appreciate your point. But then its a globla problem and whites are the minority so do we give them space on our terms or is it eventually taken away form us by force???

>> Well in that case, it will definitely be Gillard. You Hinchy can always be counted on to back the loser. You have an uncanny knack for it. You see.

The puppet Master always play a master piece. I thought this advanced society would know. The question is who is your real master ignore your illusion of voting power.

Racine (22 August)is perfectly right, this will be the future for our children unless some fearless politician stands up for Australlians and cuts the immigration of non-causcasions. We will end up like Engand, a shadow of its former self. If this makesme racist - then I am.
