Julia Gillard's first BIG mistake?
THURSDAY: Julia Gillard has admitted she's yet to speak to East Timor's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao about her proposal to send asylum seekers to a regional processing centre she wants built there.
Leaders of the tiny island nation are debating the issue today but it's unlikely Australia's plan will be given the green light.
But the Prime Minister says she's willing to work with all regional neighbours.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gusmao has said today his government was open to considering Ms Gillard's plan to set up a refugee processing centre in the country but is waiting for a concrete proposal to be put forward.
HINCH: In the flood of words about the boat people and Julia Gillard’s unveiling of the Pacific Solution Mark II - in which Nauru merely gets replaced be East Timor – a backflip that the new PM brazenly denies, the most telling line comes from Samantha Maiden writing in The Australian.
She says: '...Gillard would have us believe that all she has to do is put in a single phone call to East Timor and - hey, presto! - a regional processing centre concept bursts into life. A newly elected prime minister will be tucked up in Rudd’s old bed at The Lodge before the details are sorted out’. And she is right.
This is a shameless Rudd-style policy on the run announcement purely designed to grab some of the anti- boat people vote back from Tony Abbott.
It turns out Julia Gillard only called East Timorese President Ramos Horta the night before officially announcing the East Timor solution.
That country’s Prime Minister Xanano Gusmao didn’t know anything about it. Neither did the deputy prime minister who said they couldn’t handle such a project. And didn’t want it.
No wonder Ms Gillard took no questions on such a dramatic policy change yesterday and released no policy documents and nowhere is the cost mentioned.
Hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money have been spent on detention centres at Nauru and Christmas Island and the Rudd Government recently spent a fortune on extensions to Christmas Island.
Now, I’m told Christmas Island will be phased out and a new facility eventually built outside Dili. At what cost? We don’t know? Will the East Timorese approve it? We don’t know.
And there is the other issue which the new PM has decided to smother by describing the Abbott vow to ‘turn the boats back’ as rubbish.
Didn’t think it was rubbish in the 2007 campaign when Kevin Rudd vowed to do the same thing.
And earlier than that Julia Gillard said she wanted to do ‘everything we can to stop people smuggling’ and ‘turning boats around that are seaworthy that can make the return journey, and are in international waters, fits in with that’.
Was that also rubbish?
One thing to come out of this: If the Left wing of the Labor Party and the Greens thought they now had a puppet in power they were mightily mistaken. This is a naked grab for re-election. Polls and popularity outrank policy every time.
This is pure Graham Richardson: Whatever it takes.
Reith slams copycat PM
The Prime Minister and Opposition leader are continuing to trade barbs over each other's asylum seeker policy as Peter Reith tells 3AW's Neil Mitchell Julia Gillard has simply copied his Nauru policy.

Hey, Guys,
Julia Gillard's one of Kevin Rudd's team member, what do you think she will play if she is in power, She will not be any better than Kevin Rudd, she might be the next one the labour party get rid of ....You never know. Labour party didn't play the game by the rules. Who ever vote for Julia Gillard will regret later.
In my opinion, you cannot trust labour.
I am a communist by the way, I actually like the way Labour played the game, like communist will do.Nobody Saturday 21 August, 2010 - 9:54 AM -
There is a ridiculous bias between men and women in this campaign. Where on EARTH is it written in the doctrines of democracy that if you've got red hair and female anatomy, you're better off voting for Gillard...? That's just TRASH! An uneducated sexist view of politics is the antithesis to understanding how this country is run and will ultimately lead to many people making the wrong decision! Men and women wake up! You're not electing an Australian Idol singer, vote for the better candidate! Not the one you identify with personally... Idiots.

It's about time we get a woman into power - damn all men. I'm an 86 year old war widow. I believe that now that we have a woman in power we're going to make some sense of this country (or are we??). Being a red head myself I support Julia Gillard fully, however, there are some points that I disagree on. As much I would like to comment on it I don't believe that that "sort of language" is tolerated on this forum! I will refrain from using such vulgar language, but I do believe the dude in the budgy smugglers is the one to run the country. If there was ever a prescription for Viagra for women, Tony Abbott has my vote.

"The East Timor Solution" or should we call it "The Howard revisited Pacific Solution" under a different name and a different Government.
Playing the game of a sheep does not change the fact of committed principles of a wolf from the past "Gang of Four". Every one of Gillard's past committments have been watered down - what a joke!!!
Like a Tiger or a Rat, changing its appearance to suggest a more friendly and committed image to the issues will not wash.
"Labor Failed Again".
How much more of this total incompetence will the Australian pepole tolorate???
Beware of the wolf in sheep's clothing.
It's like the bearer of false gifts.
The current governement must GO ASAP!!

'Dud' follows 'Rudd the Dud'. What we have is another 'Dud' for the previous 'Dud'. Might as well call her Julia Rudd! What will it take for the Australian public to see right through her facade? How many more billions of taxpayer dollars will it take for Australians to say ENOUGH? Not to mention the instability this is causing in the financial sector! We have an incompetent first term government - this last leadership change does not alter this fact. Gillard was one of the 'gang of four' who made the earlier debarcle decisions. Nothing has changed. Australia WAKE UP!
Gillard is implicated in all the decisions made under Kevin Rudd. Among the most prominent debarcles are:
Education so called 'Revolution' - greatly mismanaged and a costly mistake. Thanks Julia!
Mining supertax now renamed - backdown. What a copout!
Asylum seeker centre in East Timor - without their formal agreement. Gillard's version of diplomatic skill. What an embarrasement for proper Australian diplomacy. And, an insult to East Timor's Government!
ETS debarcle - a real backflip!
Home insulation catastrophe that, let's not forget cost human lives. A rushed, not properly thoughtout policy that exhibits poor management, and again, has cost the Australian taxpayer millions.
I for one will not be a 'bunny' again. This government has got to GO!!
