Julian Knight seeks secret prison files

PLAYING NOW: Derryn Hinch speaks to 3AW Court Reporter Phil Johnson and takes calls on Julian Knight.

Just over twenty years ago when I was hosting the Hinch program on Channel Seven my investigative reporter, Pamela Graham, obtained through Police sources a frightening piece of video.

It showed Julian Knight re-enacting for Police how he stalked and shot and killed seven people and wounded 19 others during that Sunday night massacre on Hoddle Street in 1987.

There is one bit of footage that is burned into my brain. Julian Knight showing police how he crouched down behind a wall and aimed at another victim. He was talking to police and the scariest thing was he looked like he was enjoying himself. Enjoying his notoriety.

I thought then this man should never be released from jail. And you thought he wouldn’t be.

After all he is serving a maximum seven life sentences. Well, Knight who has been judged a vexatious litigant is trying again. As he points out – he is due for parole in less than four years.

NOTHING ever justifies capital punishment. But there is absolutely no reason that this little man should EVER be released from jail.

This violent criminal is glorifying himself and gaining public attention. Why should he be released? It would have been better to have solved the problem with a noose around his neck! There are some cases, particularly with mass killers, that justify capital punishment.
