What we're talking about

No sympathy for Story bridge killer

Story

There’s a tragic story out of Brisbane today that really angers me. Apart from the death of an innocent two-year-old boy at the hands of his own father. I am angry at the way the story has been reported. The Australian has another schmaltzy, pussy-footing story which starts  at the headline: Mystery at father-son bridge fall.

It wasn’t a mystery. The little boy did not fall. He was thrown off Brisbane’s Story bridge in the middle of the night. And the father did not fall. He jumped.

The story is even worse. ‘Police were last night piecing together what happened before and after Jason Lee, 40 – a ‘much loved’ master and sports coach at the school known as Churchie -- rode his pushbike on to the bridge with his two-year-old son about 3a.m.’

It goes on to talk about him being an international Sevens rugby referee, originally from Canada. The story reports how highly regarded and how much loved he was at Anglican Church Grammar School.  His enthusiasm  for teaching, his gentlemanly approach, etcetera etcetera.

Nothing too gentlemanly about taking your sleeping baby from his cot in the middle of the night, driving to the bridge, strapping your child into a seat for a pushbike ride to the top of the bridge – and death.

What annoys me most about this is that little boy’s mother doesn’t rate a mention for about seven paragraphs. And then just: ‘Police said the family were ‘too distraught and distressed” to speak publicly, with investigators refusing to speculate on the state of Mr. Lee’s relationship with his psychologist wife, Danielle, or his mental health’.

Makes it sound like it was her fault. And how about her mental health today?  A mother goes to bed and wakes up to find not only that her son is missing. He has been killed. Thrown off a bridge by her husband.

I don’t care that Jason Lee killed himself. I do care that a little boy also died in an act of revenge. An act of cruelty. The way that Arthur Freeman calculatingly decided to inflict lifelong pain on the mother of their daughter Darcey when he threw that defenceless child off the West Gate.

Don’t waste your breath on this vicious coward. I’m not interested in his enthusiasm and dedication to church and school.

He should be remembered as a killer who didn’t have the guts to just top himself. Had to inflict lasting pain on those he supposedly loved.

Save all your tears for a woman named Danielle. She is trying to cope with a nightmare.

  • Thankyou Derryn for telling this story like it is. The journalists who wrote glowing reports of this murderer need to reassess their approach to reporting the facts. This man was no hero, no-one to look up to... he was a cold blooded murderer who killed a two year old boy. Imagine the fear of the child who was old enough to comprehend he was going to die or be badly hurt.. no wonder he screamed. Imagine the poor mother who wakes in the morning to find her son is dead and who knows every morning for the rest of her life will be faced without her little boy being alive. I hope Jason Lee rots in hell and I hope something is done about the Story Bridge which seems a magnet to sick minded people like him. Rest in Peace to the little boy who died. Our prayers are with you.

  • I'm really confused. All world papers, news reports, and eye witnesses, say Brad was 'thrown' off the bridge. Now I'm hearing from the mothers speech at the funeral, how comforting it is to know her child was held till the end. When did the story change? (I hope to God this was the true ending). Wouldn't police investigators have been able to piece this information together from the evidence? Can anyone clarify if I've missed a bulletin or something. I google this story everyday in search of answers & just trying to understand what drove a seemingly 'normal' person to commit such an unforgivable act.

He jumped.too much media for the father,he seems to be treated like some hero who did good in this world.well bollocks to him,if he wanted to jump because he was feeling sorry for himself,so be it but did he have to take his 2 yr old son with him.??? NO he did not. What he did was selfish.

  • Every bit of good that was achieved by this man in life was cancelled out the moment he threw his son from that bridge.......murderer.

  • Oh God Adam...disgruntled fathers. Come on, no one, nothing, not ever makes you throw your kid off a bridge.
It's your type of comment that gives them the excuse. You're not siding with the father, then rewrite you piece. What it should say is 'Disgraceful father murders his baby son...

  • As soon as I heard the story I thought there will be a marital breakdown factor in this. This guy's actions are despicable and said 'if I can't have him then neither can you'.
