Rudd in really hot water: Hinch

Kevin Rudd

NOTE: Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will be in the 3AW studio after 8:30am on Friday.

HINCH: I am starting to think the Rudd Government could not organise a piss up in a brothel with a handful of $50 notes.

The Ruddster and his mob have wasted billions of dollars of your money. No wonder the country's accounts are inked with red. And I'm not talking about the $50 million it is going to cost to tear the aluminium foil out of roofs as a postscript to the failed and fatal insulation scheme.

Their latest cockup is exposed on Page One of the Herald Sun today. They have spent a fortune on installing massive hot water systems in sporting club dressing rooms. Clubs that didn't need them and should not have been eligible.

A spokesman for the PM's new Mr Fixit, Greg Combet, says the hot water rebate was only meant for private households and not sporting clubs and he can't explain how the clubs had got them.

One club on the Murray River got 17 new systems. Almost one for every player in the team. And they've only got four showers. They cost the club about $20 each. Cost you mug taxpayers a fortune.

Another club in Gippsland got 12 units for six showers. They had to turn them off because the electricity to run them all was too expensive. So much for this wonderfully green Government's energy saving campaigns. Another club got 12 units but six were stolen.

Was anybody supervising this rort? Was Peter Garrett burning the midnight oil on this doozy as well?

My first thought on reading that was this: How many pensioners in this country would happily pay $20 for a new hot water system. People who paid taxes for 40 or 50 years. What a great retirement gift to make their twilight years a smidgeon more comfortable.

But I forgot. Pensioners don't matter twiddly-squat in this country. It's all about working families and first home buyer bonuses and buying votes from would be mothers with paid maternity leave.

I'm encouraged that hot water is in the news today. The Ruddster and his inept team are certainly in it.

  • Obviously, the research was as good as Combet's who stated he didn't know how the clubs had got them.

  • The reason the club was able to get the rec's as it is correctly known, is it is a commercial application and is not the governments hotwater rebate. It is not tax payer funded but funded under by the large energy users. I wonder how long the research was for this article.
