What we're talking about

Why do politicians always lie?

Julia Gillard

Is it any wonder that nobody trusts our politicians any more? They couldn’t lie straight in bed.

It’s just not our new Prime Minister Julia Gillard who heads a minority government by the slimmest of margins and the most tenuous of grips.

Remember Paul Keating and his pledge on tax cuts? They were L.A.W. law.

And John Howard with his weasely ‘core and non-core’ promises.

Prime Minister Gillard was asked today if her ‘no carbon tax’ pledge at last year’s federal election was a ‘core or non-core promise’ and she ducked it.

She had to. This is a broken promise of  Everest proportions.

‘There will be no carbon tax under the government I lead’.

Now she was either lying through her teeth or she doesn’t plan to be leading the Government when the Greens-inspired Carbon Tax  comes in next year.

It is more than Bob Brown-inspired. This is blackmail. Give us this and we’ll let you keep the keys to The Lodge for a bit longer.

His deputy, Christine Milne is shamelessly boasting that they hold the strings. They control the puppet. She said yesterday ‘It’s happening because we have shared power in Australia’.

And boy, are they starting to get their pound of flesh. It will get worse when they take control of the Senate in July.

Why doesn’t Julia Gillard make this carbon pitch the mainstay of her campaign for the next election? Because, despite all her rubbish about having a mandate from the Australian people, she doesn’t. Why do you think they threw the ETS out the window as fast as they tossed Kevin Rudd.

Julia Gillard even dumped her promised Citizens’ Assembly because she wasn’t confident, no matter how they stacked it, what their recommendations would be.

Like other citizens they would be scared of how this will affect the price of everything from electricity to the petrol pump.

The biggest hypocrisy in all this is not the broken election promise. Sadly, pollies do that every time.

The biggest hypocrisy is this evangelical greening of Australia when we are desperate to sell our coal and minerals to China – the biggest polluter in the world.

And why should Australians be the tail trying to wag the international dog. The biggest polluters aren’t rushing into this. The United States, Russia, China, India.

Why should Bob Brown, a minor from Tasmania – one of the smallest electorates at the arse end of the world – try to force us to be a world changer.

More to come...
