'A young kid pulled a meat cleaver'

Andrew Pitt

A former Australian motorcycle champion has been the victim of a road-rage incident in Melbourne's outer south-east.

Superbike and MotoGP rider Andrew Pitt was cycling on a push-bike with other motorbike riders at Mulgrave when a bus nearly side-swiped the group on Sunday afternoon.

Pitt has told Neil Mitchell the group challenged the driver at the next intersection, only to be brushed off by the driver, then threatened with a meat cleaver brandished by a teenager on the bus.

Relations between drivers and bicyclists have reached fever-pitch after Shane Warne's very publicised spat with a Southbank cyclist two weeks ago.

Neil Mitchell told listeners on his way to work this morning he almost got into a verbal altercation with a driver who cut him off, but once the guy mouthed an apology Neil said it all was immediately forgotten.

Listen to Andrew Pitt's interview below.

  • Kenny, you need to understand that just because you say something it does not make it true. References please.

  • I was towing my horse float my years ago in the city, I was sitting at a red light minding my own business when a cyclist ran staight into the back of my float! I had 2 horses on who go a big fright & still the cyclist said it was my fault. How this is my fault I still dont know. they are a law to themselves.

  • Apart from not understanding the purpose and logistics of registration, you people need to analyse your motivation. This argument is being driven purely by intolerance and registration will not solve it. Come to grips with the fact that you might be briefly held up every now and then, understand that there are a few morons who will do the wrong thing and learn to cope with it. Surely our society can deal with that without having to run to someone to try and make it go away. The consequence of a moron on a bike doing the wrong thing doesn't remotely compare with a moron behind the wheel of a car and there are many more morons in cars. If the statistics for cars were the same as bikes, you wouldn't have to register them either.

  • As a bus driver of 18 years, get cyclists off our routes, they are so irresponsible, freqently hog bus lanes, drift wide and in general hold us up daily. Remember we have a schedule to keep to, our company is penalised by the goverment if we do not run to time and we get held up by some flouro wando on a bike.
There are plenty of other roads without route busses, let them use those and get off our roads.

  • There was some research done and a proposal put forward regarding licensing and registration of adult cyclists under Mr Brumby. Nothing hard about it and it would be self funding and still return a bonus for general revenue.
Ted needs to review that proposal and get it up and running. Time these clowns were held responsible for their actions.

  • Lukew, Registration of bikes should not be that hard, authorities successfully manage to have registered all other road using vehicles such as cars, motor bikes, caravans, trailers, trucks, buses, even water craft such as boats, & jet skis have to be registered. It could be a benefit to the cyclist by then allowing them to access TAC insurance for any injury they may sustain while using public roadways it might even encourage more respect between the cyclists and other road users.
