Tony Hodges has resigned from Julia Gillard's team

MONDAY: Neil Mitchell says a senior Labor minister recently told him Julia Gillard 'has got a talent for the stuff-up .. when everything seems to be going well for her she somehow manages to blow it'.

The 3AW host says the Prime Minister's credibility is questionable after her staff was implicated in the embarrassing scenes in Canberra on Australia Day, when Aboriginal Tent Embassy protesters stormed an award ceremony to challenge Tony Abbott on comments he was later found never to have made.

Images from the wild protest, including of a terrified-looking Prime Minister being dramatically ushered into a car by her security, were seen around the world on Australia's national day.

The protesters were made aware of Mr Abbott's location and were apparently misinformed by UnionsACT boss Kim Sattler as to what Mr Abbott said about the Tent Embassy on Australia Day morning.

Ms Sattler received her information regarding Mr Abbott's location from Ms Gillard's now-resigned media staffer, Tony Hodges.

Meanwhile, 3AW is working to confirm Ms Sattler posted this comment on the 3AW website on Australia Day afternoon, following the violence:

"I was present at this incident. A very peaceful event was going on next door when word arrived that Abbott had called for the dismantling if the Tent Embassy! What a provocative and dangerous statement to make on such a day! The PM was not in danger from the crowd - they were angry with TonyAbbott. The police decided to move Gillard and Abbott out of the venue together! Tony Abbott put the PM in danger!"

The above comment was posted with attribution to Ms Sattler and a UnionsACT email domain.

3AW has recorded the IP address from where the comment was originally posted from.

In other developments, the Australian Federal Police say preliminary inquiries into the disclosure of Mr Abbott's whereabouts on Australia Day show no criminal offence occurred.

In response to the Opposition's calls for an AFP investigation, the authority has said: "The AFP can confirm it became aware of information concerning the alleged disclosure of information on the location of the Leader of the Federal Opposition, Mr Tony Abbott, during Australia Day," an AFP spokeswoman told The Australian Online.

"The AFP subsequently evaluated the information and no evidence of a criminal act was identified. As such, the AFP is not conducting an investigation."

SUNDAY: The Opposition says conflicting versions of what sparked last Thursday's violent demonstrations in Canberra highlight the need for a police investigation.

Unions ACT Secretary Kim Sattler, who was named by Julia Gillard as having received the tip-off about Tony Abbott's whereabouts on Australia Day, has disputed the Prime Minister's version of events.

Christopher Pyne told 3AW, Ms Gillard's integrity needs to be questioned.

UPDATE: The Prime Minister says a media staffer was not authorised to speak to anyone about Tony Abbott's comments on the Aboriginal Tent Embassy.

Julia Gillard has outlined the events leading to the resignation of a staff member over his involvement in the violent Australia Day protest in Canberra.

Tony Hodges informed unionist Kim Sattler that Mr Abbott had wanted to shut the Tent Embassy, and that the Opposition leader was attending an event nearby.

She passed on the message to a number of highly-charged Aboriginal activists, including Barbara Shaw, who confronted Mr Abbott and Ms Gillard at the function.

Ms Gillard says she had no idea what Mr Hodges had done, and after a thorough investigation she accepted his resignation.

3AW's Elise Mooney said on the Weekend Break Mr Hodges would still have his job today had the protesters not stormed the Canberra restaurant.

EARLIER: Members of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy claim they were "set-up" by the Prime Minister's office to raid an Australia Day function at a nearby restaurant.

Activists cliam a union official told them of Tony Abbott's location after mistakenly informing them the Opposition leader had wanted to shut down the makeshift Embassy.

It's alleged well-connected Labor figure, Kim Sattler, was originally tipped-off by one of the Prime Minister's media staffers, Tony Hodges, who has since resigned.

On her Facebook page on Saturday, Sattler berated Mr Abbott for his role in the fracas, according to News Limited.

"Tony Abbott is like your typical bar-room brawler who starts a fight and then disappears like a coward when it is in full swing," she wrote.

On Saturday, Julia Gillard said Hodges acted alone in passing on what she says was information given to him by a journalist to Sattler.

Ms Gillard denied Hodges, who she described as a 'decent person', misrepresented Mr Abbott's comments, which ultimately led to the angry reaction from Tent Embassy protesters.

Aboriginal elder and Tent Embassy co-founder, Michael Anderson, believes the PM's office was playing on the high emotions that had already been gripping the crowd, who regard Australia Day as "invasion day".

  • AFP gave us Simon Overland too. I'm not convinced they know what a crime is, let alone how to investigate one.

  • The plastic police in the AFP are at the direction of Gillard and Co. - that is why they will not investigate this matter. In any case it would be nothing more than a palpable, wanton whitewash of the true facts. It is patently clear there have been serious criminal offences committed here as well as breaches of their public sector management legislation!!
