Alleged Opal basher 'witnessed murder'

A court's heard a youth accused of a spree of Melbourne CBD bashings and robberies was suffering the after-effects of seeing a murder and being a key prosecution witness.

Giving evidence to oppose bail for 18-year-old North Melbourne woman Jessica Croucher, police told the court Croucher had direct involvement in three separate CBD incidents in the early hours of January 8, during which a number of people were injured.

In the first incident, Australian basketballer Rachel Jarry sustained bruises and bleeding to her face and her friend a broken nose in a street robbery.

Three men were injured in a separate incident about 10 minutes later and in a third incident about 90 minutes after that a man needed surgery for a deep laceration to an arm after he suffered was attacked with a box-cutter.

Croucher's lawyer said her client suffered Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder caused by witnessing a murder for which she was to be a key prosecution witness.

Croucher faces charges including intentionally causing serious injury, threat to kill, robbery and theft.

A decision is expected on Friday.

  • Any truth in the rumour that defence lawyers are now employing soap opera script writers?. Who else would come up with the heart wrenching,woe is me pleas of mitigation we hear constantly being put forward in today's court cases.
