'Birthday bashing' new craze?

The principal of an exclusive Melbourne boys school says a bashing which left a 16 year old in hospital was a prank that went too far.

The year 10 boy was thrown to the ground and punched by fellow students at Xavier College because it was his birthday.

He sufferred a lacerated spleen and spent three days in hospital.

Principal Dr Chris Hayes says the student involved met with the injured students parents.

Police says they're aware of the incident but there has been no formal complaint and they're not investigating at this stage.
