Queensland Police deny shooting a shirtless, gun-wielding man who sparked a Brisbane shopping centre emergency this afternoon.

Brisbane's Queen Street mall was evacuated after an hour-long stand off with the gun, believed to be aged in his 20s.

Officers said they used non-lethal weapons to subdue the man, who is now under police guard in hospital.

Reporting live from the scene, 4BC reporter Nick Wiggins told Denis Walter he heard gunshots echoing through and later saw an ambulance leave the mall.

Shops in the city centre were forced to close their doors and thousands of lunchtime shoppers were ordered out of the area.

Heavily-armed police were called to the scene along with negotiators.

Earlier 4BC Brisbane reporter Nick Wiggins told Denis Walter the mall is in the heart of Brisbane's city, with witnesses reporting seeing a man with no shirt screaming and waving a handgun.
