Ela Carte's Morsels
Animal Crackers
Zoo Twilights is back at the Melbourne Zoo, and while it’s obviously mainly about the music, there are plenty of culinary reasons to head along too. This season brings gems like James Reyne and Daryl Braithwaite, Gurrumul, Kasey Chambers, James Morrison and Lior.
There’s a variety of food on offer, including sushi, curries, Mexican and stirfries, and the perfect picnic accompaniment – the cheese platter. The event is fully licensed, so it’s easy enough to procure a good drop to go along with your dinner.
For a more indulgent experience, some evenings give you the option of a Dinner and Show package – an extra $45 on the ticket price will get you a two course meal in the Leopard Lodge plus access to a VIP viewing area in the open pavilion.

Common Theme?
It’s all about food on film for Fitzroy’s The Commoner this year, they’re running a calendar of cult movie inspired menus from Planet of the Apes, to Jaws – and starting with Poultrygeist with “smokin’ hot birds”. Each is priced at $80 for five courses, or $120 with matching wines. Best way to try it out might be at the “Launch Night” for each menu, the first Thursday of a month when more casual tastings of food and wine will be offered across the night for $60.

Bayside revival
Friends in the inner Bayside suburbs are particularly excited by the refurbishment of Hampton local haunt San Sebastian. Now simply known as “Sebastian’s”, it’s apparently it’s a bit brighter and shinier, with a fun and fresh menu. Will definitely be getting down there to check it out.
Generally speaking …
Another café that’s been getting rave reviews from local punters is the The General Food Store in Emerald, the quote given to me was “a little bit of Fitzroy in the hills”.
They’re working hard to keep the menu fluid and the produce seasonal, their Facebook page reveals the daily muffin specials (think Pear & Walnut, Apple & Rhubarb or Blood Plum and Pistacchio). Dying to try the Smoked Pork Neck and Borlotti Beans for breakfast!
