Wyndham Cache – 1 K Avenue Werribee South www.wyndhamchache.com.au

Please – leave your prejudices at the door.

Eatery. Werribee. South.

I can see you all wanting to make jokes, but believe it or not – there are a number of choices for dining in the area, and they’re all pretty impressive.

We know there’s a lovely fine diner in Joseph’s at the Mansion, and I’ve spoken on the program before about the fabulous pizzas, meals and wines at Shadowfax Winery. But, when we asked Werribee South locals for the best place to get a feed in the area, the consensus was overwhelming. Residents have welcomed newcomer Wyndham Cache with open arms, and for good reason.

LT’s Egg Farm has inhabited the site for over 40 years, but this shiny new café is a very recent addition, and it’s complemented by a very impressive gourmet foodstore boasting free range poultry, Australian honey, homemade jams and pies, and more.

The building is big and shiny, it’s not the country style feel you might expect. Big walls of glass show off the surrounding fields.

The menu’s pretty expansive – it doesn’t break the mould, but it gives you a good range of café/pub reliables – from classic parmas and beer battered fish, to Caesar salads and BLTs.

My steak sandwich ($16.50) was wonderful in its simplicity – normal bread. Yes, I repeat, normal sandwich bread, toasted then filled with a thin but tender steak, cheese, homemade relish, aioli, onions and the obligatory chips on the side.

Spiced chicken salad ($16.50) was considerably healthier – strips of marinated chicken with greek style salad all sitting atop a large pita, with a great addition of thyme marinated mushies.

All sounds good and well so far, but then we have an issue – and that issue is false and misleading advertising. One of the menu sections is titled “Light Snacks” – pretty self explanatory, really. A word of warning: the Wyndham Cache Wagyu burger ($17.50) is NO light snack. It’s a beheamoth, with a big fat juicy pattie, onions, lettuce, cheese aioli, gorgeous bacon and a fried egg complete with runny, bright orange yolk (from LT’s famous egg farm of course). So it’s not the type of false advertising you’re going to complain about. Apart from working out how you’re going to fit the thing in your gob it’s certainly a pleasant experience, and if you’re lucky, you might even get through three quarters of it, although there are the chips on the side to squeeze in as well.

When it comes to beverages, there’s a good local focus in the wine with drops from Shadowfax and Long Flat which are extremely affordably priced at between $5.50 - $6.50 a glass and around $20-25 for the bottle.

It’s the local hospitality and generosity that no doubt sees the locals adopting Wyndham Cache as the new clubhouse leader in regional dining, and it’s certainly worth a thought for out-of-towners who find themselves visiting the area.
