Ellen hype unwarranted?

American TV host Ellen DeGeneres is coming to Australia, but 3AW Entertainment Reporter Pete reckons the media hype is unwarranted.

"Have you ever seen such an overreaction?  Unbelievable the coverage she's gotten. Particularly on Sydney on Saturday, the story goes on page 1, page 2 and page 3," Pete said, without mentioning the Herald Sun's first page coverage here in Melbourne.

"The woman clearly has had no interest in coming to Australia whatsoever...She's obviously just gone into a business arrangement to film some segments for the show.

"This is very much just a bare bones version of what Oprah did a few years ago."

Pete backed up his argument by pointing out that Ellen has never once been to Australia, despite her longtime partner, Actress Portia De Rossi, hailing from Geelong. 

"The way it's being reported, you'd think she's walking across the Pacific to get here.  It's not that big a deal."

Ellen announced her overseas adventure last week, inviting 400 audience members with her, prompting squeals of delight.

"Despite the panting and the crying, you'll find half the people won't even go because they don't have passports," Pete said.

  • What a load of rubbish really she has been with portia how long ? and has never found time to come here and see her side of the family that is disgusting really and now all of a sudden here she come in march and bringing 400 of her followers. But dont worry Australian people will have to pay for a ticket to be on her show and its our taxes that more than likely will be paying for her and the band of merry friends well done swisse and qantas you couldnt have found and aussie to promote your brand so you had to go overseas and get one shame on you and really Ellen thats the best you could find And it's not tall poppy syndrome I have watched her show and it's not really that great yeah she gives a lot of money away that i think is fantastic and so many people have been touched by her kindness but as an entertainer not that superb does a little dance routine partonises her guest gives them her underwear and gives away money which is probably for tax reasons anyway so no not impressed at all.

  • To Kel. Thanks for all of your supposition. Your response is a fine example of the vacuous, hysterical devotees of shallow television. I was addressing the disproportionate amount of attention given to a tv personality by mindless couch dwellers and money minded tv networks attempting to increase their sales of advertising. The value of a visit by any foreign, or for that matter, local tv personality, barely moves the importance-o-meter of life but here you are, all prickly and out for blood in the defense of nothing more than the tv equivalant of shredded phonebooks. Back to your Jenny Craig meal before it gets cold Kel.

  • Spot on Eddy - is there a more empty and dumbed down form of entertainment than the Ellen show? Maybe there is - when she gets here we can show her our own version of vacuous entertainment for the ignorant masses - AFL football.
