Heartbroken mums reach out
Two distraught mothers have spoken after the loss of their children.
Helen Crichton lost her 16-year-old daughter Ebony in a crash involving an allegedly drunk driver.
Just days after the funeral Ebony's friend Jake was killed when the car he was driving crashed.
Mrs Crichton says she had consoled a very upset Jake at Ebony's funeral and now he's dead.
Jake's mother, Adrienne, also shared her story and message for young drivers on the Neil Mitchell program.
Listen to the two mothers speak on 3AW as they urge young drivers to think. Just think.
Meanwhile, Victoria Police are pulling out all stops to reduce Victoria's road toll in the lead up to Christmas.
Three major road operations will run state-wide over the next three weeks targeting drink and drug drivers, speed and fatigue.
It follows a horror two weeks on our roads which has left 16 people dead.
Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe says a total of 288 people died on our roads last year and this year we are currently four fewer than for the same time last year.

Very tragic, but could have been avoided, the young man was extremely distraught over his friends death, he should never have been driving. A very sad and hard lesson.

It is the worst news a mother can receive...being told her son or daughter is dead, killed in road trauma. As a mother myself, I stood in the doorway of my own home whilst a police officer told me that my 25 year old son had died, killed in a car crash. Road trauma is so sudden and robs family, friends and the wider community of our loved ones. Just recently I talked to over 120 students about road safety, road trauma and about good driver behaviour. By sharing my family's road trauma story, it has shown me, that driver education, before they get behind the wheel of a car is the key. Giving drivers a chance to develop good driving skills on the road is important but driver behaviour is truely significant. I see this each month at Road Trauma Awareness seminars where I also talk to repeat road traffic offenders. Once they have heard a personal road trauma story, there is a realization that it really could be them killed or seriously injured or they really could be responsible for the death or serious injury of another road user, if they continue with their high at risk driver behaviour! But we need to get to our young "drivers to be" before they start on their P's. Driver behaviour is the key to saving lives and reducing serious injury on our roads through educaton for ALL 15,16,17 year-olds!
