Ken Lay throws hat into the ring
Ken Lay has confirmed he has put his hand up for the top job.
Applications for the chief commissioner position close on Monday.
Acting Chief Commissioner Lay says he has submitted his application but is reluctant to comment further.
He also refused to say whether he would want former Assistant Commissioner Ken Jones working with Victoria Police again if he is successful in his bid for the top job.
Meanwhile, Senior police say a ban by union members on overtime won't impact on the policing of AFL grand final celebrations.
The Police Association is ramping up its industrial campaign with the work bans to begin on Friday.
Acting Chief Commissioner Lay has told Neil Mitchell they'll have enough officers on duty to deal with any problems, refuting newspaper reports suggesting otherwise.

Good onya Jake you've a real intellectual giant son. I suppose your suggestion about Lewis being given the job, well, he may by now have learned his lesson that you don't corrupt those under you. So he may be a safebut shaky bet, son! But if the public interest is to be served with integrity and a new fresh leader, then Ken Jones is the best candidate in my view.

Not quite on the subject, but I am curious my office overlooks a busy 6 lane (both directions) road, level with our business is a concrete median strip break to allow for traffic turning, why does every male driver feel the need to smoke it up while making the turn, I am constantly being startled by the sound of screeching brakes as they flat foot their vehicle around the turn or while exiting opposite street or exiting from surrounding business driveways?? It is not only the young drivers either

The sad part is that I really don't believe that Ken Lay really has the image of a leader. His voice and demeanour really do not impart authority. Nothing personal again him.

After the way Nixon and Overland were railroaded it's hardly likely they're going to have a Melbourne Cup field of applicants. I'd say anyone who applies has got a pretty good chance of getting the job. :p

I agree with Patrick B. Get someone new in that isnt a member of the Boys Club and lost touch with the copper on the street."Until the Govt takes a real good look at how the dept is run by the upper ranks and is investigated by a non biased authority, the usual cover up and spin will continue. Lets hope that closets are opened up. Good to be an Ex Member, no fear of pay back.
