Mick Malthouse

3AW's Mick Malthouse says he is not surprised Ben Cousins has had a drug addiction relapse, telling Neil Mitchell the research Collingwood did on Cousins predicted it would happen.

Cousins is reportedly in psychiatric care after he received treatment for a fall last week.

Malthouse, in a wide-ranging discussion, says AFL player - no more than ever - are being robbed of their youth and it's causing off-field concerns.

Earlier, Neil Mitchell raised the contrast between Jim Stynes and Ben Cousins, saying the former is doing everything he can to try to live while the other 'seems to be doing everything he can to die'.

What do you think of Malthouse's and Mitchell's comments?

  • Leave the men alone. JK hasn't done anything to get him locked up for the past 25 years and Ben is at a horror point in his life. Let him be to fight his demons and not all you over opinionated nobodies as well.

  • People, I think everyone expects Ben will die from his drug addiction and more than likely sooner rather than later. Ben has been given chance after chance and been given their best support any addict could ever hope to have and yet still cant conquer his addiction. I think there are a million other people in the world far more deserving of attention and support. I just feel desperately sorry for Ben's dad, the pain he must be going through everyday fearing he is about to lose his son, and nothing he does works, thats the real tragedy. I just hope Ben's dad doesnt die of the stress Ben has continually inflicyed on him. The whole situation is sad but I think its time to move on and the press should just stop reporting on Ben.

  • i am sick and tired of people making excuses or feeling sorry for b. cousins.I think he is a complete waste of space and it's time you people grow up and treat him like any other over paid peanut who thinks the law is not applicable to them.He should be stripped of everything he got out of footy, because you have to think was it on an equal playing field than the other players had. mark

  • Mark you have no idea what you're talking about. My comments have nothing to do with one's right to free speech - but are commenting on your naive judgements. Do you know John Kizon? Do you know he is a terrible person who feeds Ben Cousins drugs? What did you base your initial comment on? The stories you've read in the paper? I bet you're a reader of tabloid magazines and believe the weekly fantasy stories published each week.
It is also ignorant to put the sole blame on dealers for addiction. If you have any idea of simple economics - supply meets demand. When demand dries up, so does demand. If people were educated and did not demand drugs, there would be no market for it. Do you blame McDonalds for people being fat? Should we close down all Casinos because of gambling addicts? Also, just because someone has the money to consume drugs does not mean they do - there are so many millionaires and billionaires who have not killed themselves from drug abuse. And on the other hand, I can assure you that many of your idols and heroes have consumed their fair share of drugs along the way. Would you ever have suspected Mainwairing before it all came out?
I am not saying that dealers aren't too blame, of course they are a huge problem but how dare you make such a silly comment accusing someone you don't even know or have proof of as being a dealer, and to sum up, secondly, again it is about an individual and how they react to a temptation. Not soley the availability of the temptation.

  • Sarah sorry for thinking we still have free speech. This forum is for people who want to express their veiw and if you don't like it bad luck. What ever happened to the notion of self reliance and taking responsibility for yourself. Mike Malthouse hit the nail on the head, they get paid alot of money and have alot of free time. Just like rock stars this is a perfect magnet for drug dealers. Clapton , Hendrix, SRV, Jimmy Page and Keith Richards all had massive drug problems . The early death of many great artists is tragic. The early death of anyone from drugs is tragic.
