Neil Mitchell on the 'grubby deal'
UPDATE: Key Independent Andrew Wilkie says the Coalition is to blame for losing one vote following the defection of Queensland MP Peter Slipper.
Mr Slipper was ousted from the Liberal Party after taking on the Speaker's role following the sudden resignation of Labor's Harry Jenkins.
Mr Jenkins has returned to the Government backbench handing Labor a crucial extra vote.
Leaving parliament to return to his Tasmanian electorate, Mr Wilkie says the Opposition should have done more to look after Mr Slipper.
EARLIER: Tony Abbott says Julia Gillard will face a party-room revolt over the decision to install Liberal National Party defector Peter Slipper as the new Speaker of the House.
In an unexpected move, Mr Slipper has replaced Harry Jenkins, who resigned as speaker of the House of Representatives.
The Opposition leader says he's had his differences with Peter Slipper in the past but it wasn't behind his decision to quit the Liberal Party.
Neil Mitchell says while he struggles to believe Julia Gillard knew nothing of Jenkins' resignation, it 'happens all the time in politics'.

Gillard slips away with extra vote
TOM ELLIOTT BLOG: "Julia Gillard has reshuffled the deck clearly in her short term favour. Whether the public at large admires her for this, however, remains to be seen." Read more and have your say here.

The parliament is a disgrace & so are excessive taxpayer funded expense claims.
Slipper the Rat should never have been nominated for the speakers chair.
Slipper has abused the taxpayer funded expenses travel rorts system allegedly by $1.8 Million Dollars in JUST 4 years on top of his salary & an investigation is currently underway.
We wont hold our breathe for ANY outcome now he is on the Labor side.
Assisting Labor to cling to power further, will be ANOTHER long ongoing govt controlled investigation just like the disgraceful Craig Thomson enquiry.
This is a dirty deal manipulated by the deceitful untrustworthy Labor Govt.
Albersleaze, Perrett, Rudd & Juliar all played a hand & Harry Jenkins complied.
It shows quite clearly what these people will do for power, to stay on the gravy train & it was a no brainer for any Rat.
Slipper who now has unlimited access to a private plane, overseas flights, chauffeured car, parliamentary well stocked bar, kitchen, private dining room, a few hundred thousand more, increased his lifetime yearly payments, Super & perks of travel.
This RAT is well suited to join the Labor alliance party, but it is unusual for a rat to swim towards a sinking ship!Slippery Sleazy Labor Rats Wednesday 30 November, 2011 - 1:13 AM -
Wish they would hurry up and start that revolt in the Labour Party Neil, the sooner Julia Gillard is out, the better!

Yes Neil I agree it is a "grubby deal". What is it about Queensland politicians. The Slipper issue ranks alongside that of Pat Field's appointment to the Senate back in 1975 in terms of sleaziness and disrespect for the electorate. While some may think this is again just clever political tactics, which it probably is, first and foremost it is utter contempt for the people. So Mr. Slipper, your thirty pieces of silver is $75k. History will judge you with accordingly.

People who say Tony Abbott says 'no' to everything are delusional. He says 'yes' all the time. To big Tobacco, to Clubs Australia, to the the top 50 polluters in Australia, to Indonesian abattoirs, to deep seam mining etc etc. He's a regular 'yes man'
