Nelson Mandela's family has been urged to switch off his life support with doctors saying the former South African President in a ‘permanent vegetative state’.

Revelations of his condition have been included in legal documents relating to a Mandela family dispute.

Mr Mandela's health is "perilous" and he is being kept alive by life support, according to the documents.

"He's basically gone," said Charlene Smith, an authorized biographer of the former anti-apartheid leader. "He's not there. He's not there."

The 94-year-old has been in a critical condition in a Pretoria hospital for several weeks with a lung infection.
