Nicole Brady has caused a stir on Neil Mitchell's program on Tuesday morning, proposing those who receive medical treatment “as a result of their own demise” should be refused government-funded medical care.

She argued that due to the pressures on the health system, we should consider a cessation funding of treatment for people whose own actions led to their medical conditions – including lung transplants for smokers, liver transplants for heavy drinkers, and high-blood pressure medication for the obese.

"In the health system, there’s still no expectation for people to look after their own health," Nicole Brady says.

"If they drink too much, smoke too much (or) eat too much, they can still rock up at the hospital and be treated alongside – and absolutely equally – to people who have looked after themselves all their lives."

"There’s a lot of money, a lot of time (and) a lot of resources are being chewed up by people who are basically not looking after themselves."

Nicole said who had contributed to their own demise were taking assistance away from others who have always looked after themselves and are unwell through no fault of their own.

She also suggests the health system follow the model of the welfare system, where there are conditions attached to dole recipients to undertake training and work to earn their social benefits.

  • Anybody who agrees with Ms Brady is living in the wrong epoch. Their attitudes would be much better suited to Germany in 1933. I am being serious here. Hitler had the mentally ill and intellectually disabled gassed.

People who live self destructive lives are struggling to like themselves. For that to be the case they have not had the happy lives of those who would condemn them.

Jesus said that he who is without sin can cast the first stone. I bet none of you blood thirsty fools with the ignorant slogans and small minded judgements are better human beings than those you would condemn.

    Shame on you.

  • So Anna, keep in mind the people who may smoke pay their taxes which includes the Medicare Levy, and are also paying high taxes on their habit, I gather you believe you are so perfect it gives you the right to sit in judgement of other people how nice, so I gather you do not smoke, or drink alcohol, eat unhealthy food, your body weight is perfect, you never exceed the speed limit while driving, or drive in any way that could cause you to have an accident, you are always careful when crossing the road, you get plenty of exercise, you never indulge in unprotected sexual contact etc.

  • Good on you Nicole for having the guts to says what many others of us are thinking. And yes there are people that try and do the right thing. They should be given priority. No doubt about it.
And to those that "aren't living the perfect life", you are the ones doing the whinging. I don't want to pay for your careless mistakes.

  • I wonder how many of you agreeing with this woman are living perfect lives.
Who has the right to determine who should be denied treatment? Who decides what is a perfect life?
So all of you who agree with this woman better live a perfect life or deny yourself medical treatment because you don't deserve it.
