The CFA will investigate whether an electrical fault is to blame for a massive factory fire in Gippsland overnight.

The old Morwell power station and sawmill went up in flames at 2:00am, with the fierce blaze engulfing a third of the 150  

The fierce blaze engulfed a third of the 150 by 30 metre building with 65 fire fighters taking two hours to get it under control.

Operations officer Len Scheetz said the cause is not yet known, but the building's power was still connected despite being vacant for a year.

He says the heavy downpour over the Gippsland region initially hindered their efforts because it left the ground muddy, causing issues for vehicles.

No one was injured.
