Open overrun by insects?

Insects are turning up to the Australian Open in droves

Neil Mitchell has been contacted by a listener who suggests the Australian Open is being flooded with insects, that appear to be some kind of grasshopper (UPDATE: The species revealed below).

Have you been to the tennis and seen these?

It is unclear if the Australian Open organisers are including them in official crowd figures.

  • So why don't they just squash/spray them. Problem over.

  • Nice article about Katydids at Wikipedia, now that it is out of its blackout.

  • Locusts are the swarming phase of short-horned grasshoppers of the family Acrididae. These grasshoppers have long antennae and have wings. Looks like a common brown grasshopper just having a get-together.

They are definately NOT crickets or katydids. Katydids are green and look like a leaf, and live in trees and bushes, making them hard to find.

An entomoligist (not from DSE or DPI) would be able to properly identify this species of grasshopper from the photos.

  • And they're noisy little suckers too,you can hear them shrieking, squealing, grunting and groaning, especially when there's a womens match on court.
