Rare solar event on display tonight

Posted by: Tom Andronas, 3AW | 8 March, 2012 - 4:29 PM

Star-gazers in country Victoria have a rare chance to spot the Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights tonight.

A huge magnetic storm on the sun is sending millions of particles hurtling towards earth which could make the Aurora visible much further north than usual.

There are reports that the magnetic particles could affect electrical grids and satellite navigation systems, but Perry Vlahos from the Astronomical Society of Victoria says it's more an opportunity to witness an unusual event.

If you live in country Victoria, send us your images to photos@3aw.com.au and we will publish them on this page tomorrow morning.
