Smokey haze over Melbourne

Lightning overnight has sparked about 20 fires in state forests and national parks in the state's west near Casterton and Little Desert.

No property is under threat and water-bombing aircraft are being used to help contain the outbreaks.

Weather Bureau senior forecaster Terry Ryan says many in Melbourne have woken up today to a smokey haze.

The smoke from the fires has been blown down to the sea then back again onto Melbourne:


Father & son, 3, rescued from Bay

Altona Beach ALTONA: A father and his three-year-old son have been rescued after being swept out into Port Phillip Bay. The man and his toddler son were using a rubber dinghy on Hobsons Bay this afternoon when they got into trouble.
